Indeed, that is much lighter and less reddish than chocolate brown. Staining shouldn't be too much of a problem.
There are plenty of commercially available wood stains. But since I don't know their colors, I would mix the color I need from enamel paints, heavily dilute with white spirit, and use that as a stain.
