Masking is an option. Another option is to highlight them with a gold-coloured sharp pencil. Then you have the advantage of actually being able to erase your mistakes
Such metallic-coloured pencils (not markers!) can be found in arts and crafts stores. As you are talking IJN, I have also used a silver coloured pencil to successfully highlight the rails that were used to move the spare torpedoes in IJN destroyers, and I am certain the same technique would work equally well for the aircraft-moving tracks/rails on cruisers and battleships.
