This being my 3rd ship, and my 1st full hull, I plan to mount it on an oak base supported by brass lamp finials
I just executed the following process and found it to work well.
Prior to joining of the lower hull to the upper hull, did the following:
Re-enforced the finial attachment spot on the lower hull with 3 layers of .60mm sheet styrene about a 1/2 inch square and super glue
Dry-fit the deck and full hull, then properly aligned and located the ship on the base and marked the lower hull outline on the base.
Double sided taped the lower hull to the base as marked above
Drilled with the doll rod width bit through ship hull and into base wood
Followed on the lower hull only with finial treads width bit
Placed doll rods in the base
Placed finials other doll rod
Dry-fit the ship one last time
Proceed on ship construction and or base prep; the two will mary up with epoxy or super glue when appropriate.
