Good work Dirk!

A thought....

Gluing the strips on with CA WILL be a nerver wracking process!!(nerven-zerstoerende arbeit! )

when I have to do that kind of thing I use matt varnish from Humbrol ( Matt kote),

I thin it 60/40 and drag the strip thru the liquid puddle.

Varnish has excellent 'grab'-- but it is wrongly positioned you can remove it easily without wrecking the deck or the strip.

Even once its been set for a few minutes--if you suddenly think...

Hmnnn ...

that is not perfect--simply run a brush of thinners alongside and it will come off again...

Just a thought!

MFG

Hi Jim,
Thanks for your comments.
"Nerver wracking process" was the term I wanted to use in my former discription of the process but I did not know the English term.
I think that your method with the matt varnish might be really an improvement because it will be more easy on the nerves and should be more flaw tolerant. I will try it with my next ship.

Here my latest progress report:
It seems that adding the Lionroar floatplane handling deck (flight deck) is really very complicated. I needed some time to develop a plan. First I cut all the plastic pillars from the Tamiya plastic flight deck and glued it one by one to the corresponding position of the lower deck (Mogami37).
Mogami37
Mogami37
The Lionroar instructions are not very clear here but it seems that it is expected to cut these pillars from the resin rod. This is difficult because the pillars seem to be different in length. Another reason not to use the resin rod is the larger diameter of it compared to the plastic rods. Mogami38 depicts the plastic pillars in place.
Mogami38
Mogami38
For the AA position I used the Lionroar PE parts and a segment of the resin rod and also two Tamiya plastic struts (Mogami39).
Mogami39
Mogami39
Mogami40
Mogami40
In Mogami40 this AA position is in position and some additional bull eyes are visible. Next step: A little bit of Kure grey air brushing. Here only a picture of me prepared for airbrushing.

Do you think I am overdoing safety/health precautions?

In Mogami41, 42 and 43 the lower deck is shown after adding some floatplane spare parts and other details.

Mogami43
Last time to reach these areas before gluing the flight deck. Then I used super glue (gel) on all the pillars and other areas to glue the flight deck. Then I loaded the flight deck with some extra weight (Mogami44) to make sure that the gluing is successful everywhere.
Mogami44
Mogami44
Mogami45 shows the result after adding the flight deck.
Mogami45
Mogami45
I chose to add the 14 additional struts after adding the flight deck. The first 5 are visible in Mogami46.
Mogami46
Mogami46
This is also a painstaking process because the Lionroar struts are too long and have to be shortened individually. Now I also added the two PE ladders (Mogami46-48), which substitutes the Tamiya Aztec temples.
Mogami46

Still a lot to do on the flight deck but I am really happy that the flight deck is installed now. My headache is cured now.

I added some details to the floatplane handling deck. Here the aft AA gun position is shown (Mogami49).
Mogami49
Mogami49
This position was added to IJN Mogami in her third wartime modification in June 1944. It is not included in the Tamiya and Lionroar kits and I used brass strips and other PE parts. I also modelled an open hatch in the flight deck (WEM IJN hatches).
Mogami50 shows the support construction of the deck.

More views of open hatch, AA position and rails are shown in the following pictures.

In the next step I misused Burckhardts (BMK) PE bending device for producing ropes for splinter protection (as a kind of Reeperbahn). I coiled very thin sewing thread around the recesses and fixed it with matte varnish (Mogami54).
Mogami54
Mogami54

The semi product can be seen here lying on the deck (Mogami55).
Mogami55
Mogami55
For imitating the holding ropes UNI-Thread W6/0 was very useful (even thinner than the sewing thread).
Here the results:

That was a hell of an idea on the rope Dirk :thumbs_up_1: :thumbs_up_1: say wouldn't have been better if you had added the deck railings too before adding the airplane deck? hope you got another escape plan on this one  it looks to me like a tough one with the plane's deck in place.

Dirk - WOW!!! She is really a beautiful build! Please keep those pics coming!
Now, having said that I am having a problem - I have been working away on my Aoshima Maya - now I wanna get Tamiya's Mogami! This is all your fault!!! Will it never end?
Seriously, excellent work and I can't wait to see more!

Jose, thanks for your comment. :wave_1: I did not understand your concern for the deck railings (do you mean the lower deck or the flight deck hand rails?). Maybe the following pictures answer your question.
Mark, I was very pleased to read your comments. :woo_hoo:
But I dont want to be guilty when you stop building your Maya.

Here is more:
I added the rear flag staff (Mogami59).
Mogami59
Mogami59
I followed the Miyukikai 2001 Mogami plan which depicts her in her last appearance. For the flag staff I used thin steel needles and triangles made from PE sprue. In the next pictures also the added hand rails are visible (Jose, do you men these railings?).
Mogami60
Mogami60
Mogami61
Mogami61
Mogami62
Mogami62
In the upper half of Mogami62 and in the following pictures details from the houses on the aircraft handling deck can be seen. In the Tamiya model these are just plastic blobs and on Lionroar replacement deck only the locations are marked. From the Miyukikai plan it seems that these might be ventilators or protected stations for aircraft controllers. Here I used again my finest grid and cut brass sheets for the roofs.

IJN Mogami (Tamiya 1/350)

Post by Dirk »

Thanks Jose and Dan!
Jose, a good question concerning the number of floatplanes. I don't know yet. One possibility would be to follow history as close as possible. In the book Battle of Surigao Strait from A. P. Tully there is the statement that Mogami embarked 5 Jakes for her last sortie. This will give a half empty deck. Maximum floatplanes seemed to be eleven. At the moment I have no decision. Another problem: I used 3 of the Tamiyas Petes for my Tone model. I compared the Yankee Modelworks Fujimi- Aoshima and Tamiya floatplanes. The Fujimi planes are from transparent plastic and have very thick wings. Thinning is a problem with this material and the details will be lost. A pity because the clear cockpit is an improvement or can be easily substituted with a PE frame. In my opinion, the Tamiya Petes and Jakes are the best here. But they are not available additionally. My hope is the Hasegawa floatplane set A (I ordered already 2 and it seems that they will appear next month). The Hasegawa Jake from the Yahagi kit looks really good (clear canopy and the rest in normal plastic).
Here a baby step update of my progress:
This is the aft bridge and main mast in a semi finished state.
Mogami65
Mogami65
I intend to add a lot more of details. The upper part of the main mast is a tapered brass mast from BMK, some PE parts from the Lionroar kits (reinforced by steel needles). I used also some steel needles alone. I really like them. The larger ones have a diameter of 0.25mm and the tiny ones a diameter of 0.1mm.
Mogami66
Mogami66
They are original intended to penetrate insects (insect pins) but I prefer the application in a ship model. In Germany they can be ordered at
http://www.fiebig-lehrmittel.de/index.p ... egoryid=19
For some of the details I followed the Miyukikai plan. But in this plan Mogamis aft bridge have a very different appearance compared to the Tamiya version. Another question is the crane (see Mogami 65). In the Lionroar kit there are two different versions. One is the same like in the Tamiya kit (only much better detailed). In the Miyukikai plan it is also the same but here it is clear that this is an I-beam profile. Looks a little weak and in the book Mechanisms of Japanese Heavy cruisers there are two pictures where such a crane failed (bended in the middle by more than 90). But I can not read the Japanese text. So I decided to use the heavier crane version because I think especially in a ship like Mogami with all the floatplanes (also the Zuiun was planned) a more stable crane is very likely. Dan, do you know more?

i agree with you Tamiya's planes are the best 1/350 injection planes i've seen until now, let me know how good is the Hasegawa set if these are as good as Tamiya's i'll make sure of buying a set for my Tone. after seeing all your work i can't wait to start on my 1/350 Myoko. keep up the good stuff coming Dirk :thumbs_up_1: :thumbs_up_1:

The aft bridge is nearly finished. I added the crane, splinter protection, radar (1944 modification), a wind worn flag and some of the rigging.

A problem was the Lionroar PE part for the rigging of the crane. It was not fitting and after adjusting (by some force) it was bended. Hard to substitute, but I will think of it.

Hi Dirk,

great job with all the well done and fine details :thumbs_up_1: I'm not really interested in IJN ships (shame on me?!) but it is interesting to follow your progress.

Keep on going :wave_1:
Cheers,
Christian
