1/200 Iowa Class? I have not seen any kit like this. There was a 1/192 scale Missouri by Sterling a long time ago.
These are a great bunch of guys!
I'd imagine Steve will pipe in with comments regarding his 1/192 Missouri. You can pepper us all with your questions.

hi all,

i am building the tamiya 1/700 missouri using the gmm ww2 usn battleship set. I have the follwing questions on using the pe:

1 for the tail crane, i am not sure about how the pe rigging should fit on the crane. while there is a pit on the "strongback", there is no hole on the crane for the rigging to wedge in.

2. for the hooks on the crane, shall the hooks be glued to one side of the hook and then seal the two sides of the crane tip?

3. for the mk.3 radar, the instruction sheet tells me to put a mk.3 radar onto the conning tower, but i'm not sure the exact location. most photos i found dun show clearly and even i cannot recogize such a radar exist on the photos.

For clarification with GMM products, contact Lorren Perry, (GMM), directly.
I have used the GMM WWII BB set for the Tamiya 1/700 WWII Missouri and the Modern New Jersey kits. The reason for this: this p/e set was re-done in part to accurately accomodate the Tamiya Iowa Class BB's, best for the Tamiya kits main deck railings...sweeeeeet! Before Tamiya there was the Fujimi kit(s) and then the Trumpeter Modern Iowa Class kits.
Operation facelift?
The Tamiya 1/350 Missouri and New Jersey kits have a blunt bow; tooooooooo blunt!!! The drawings I've seen all show a more tapered/slender bow...especially looking down onto the foredeck. That's all I'm talking about here...the foredeck. Tamiya got it right on their 1/700 Iowa's, and I'll show some pics to compare.
So, I have decided to give my 3 year old Missouri project a facelift...literally!

After drilling out the external anchor hawsepipes, I sanded away the blisters added on the hull exterior to keep the anchor away from the ships bulbous bow/forefoot when being lowered, (skipping from model to the real ship here...).
Please foregive; some of the nautical jargon escapes me...without cheating....

Here are some pics of my 1/350 Missouri. Now you can see what I was talking about...
Here is a looking down view of the forward tip....

Here is the same view showing more of the bow....Notice that the port side foredeck and hull seam is very thin, and in some places non existant.....
Notice lastly that I have left alone the starboard side so you can clearly see the difference....


Here is a bow on shot showing theport side hawsepipe "blister" after being sanded away....

Here is the Tamiya 1/700 New Jersey....notice the lesser blunt, "nose"..

Please forgive the blurr, but I didn't want to do any more picture taking tonight....
When I'm finished, the 1/350 Missouri will be a whole lot more like the more accurate 1/700 bow area...
I will have to replace teh bow 20mm tub...or modify the out of it...maybe...Plus, I will be adding back on the anchor, "blisters".

Very nice Tony, your completed model looks alot better than my first ship... (USS New Jersey, Modernized, Measure 32/22D paint scheme..tis a mess..)

Could anybody help me in the Iowa thread in the Computer Modelling section? Kinda need some help on modelling the ship...

Missouri 1/350:
I have sanded through to the main deck at the bow in order to achieve the correct Iowas' bow shape. I can go no further, and I don't think I'll need to anyway. It looks about right. I did have to add in some strip styrene and filler, as I ended up with a sizeable void through the hulls' side and beneath the foredeck. The "unknown zone", is when I'll be applying the railings. Don't expect any trouble.....

The foredeck is L'Arsenal's from the surface-up.
The foredeck is the Tamiya deck and the surface details are either scratch'd or from L'Arsenal. I was too far along to use his entire foredeck piece, so I cut away all of the "Key" L'Arsenal detail pieces, (wildcat bases, hawsepipes) and affixed them to a stripped down foredeck. It worked!
I still need to scratch up the anchor chain stays and affix them. This is where I stalled out before...numerous 1/700th reasons... .
After that, I'll probably try to add realism to the wood main deck. I will also need to paint the hull soon.

The BUSHIPS diagram of the early USS MISSOURI camouflage scheme (Measure 32, Design 22D) show the dull black extending from the sides of the ship up onto the main deck and onto the decks of the superstructure. It appears as if dull black covers the majority of the topside decks. Was the scheme really applied this way or did they leave the decks painted in deck blue and just apply the camo to the ship sides? Thanks, Rich

G'day Guys!

Been a while since I posted last, been in the middle of some major renovations. I have got a little work done with my repair and lower hull fitting out of my Tamyia 1/700 Mighty Mo.

I hope to post some pics soon, when I get some extra time and work out how!

I encountered only a few problems with trying to fit a tumpeter 1991 Missouri lower hull, mainly solved with sanding, and toothpicks. This fit isnt the best, but sitting on a bookshelf means that it passes fairly well! The damage caused by the fall has ment some dodgy scratchbuilding of a mast and yard arm, but she survived fairly well otherwise.

Some good news though, I placed on lay buy a 1/350 Missouri and hope to make the final payment when I get my tax back!

Hi Guys,
After a week of some sparce model building effort.....
it hardly seems worth it.
I sanded and re-contoured the bow of 1/350 Tamiya Missouri. I could only go so far....
See pics of 1/350 Missouri compared to Tamiya 1/350 New Jersey hull..same hull. Barely noticeable for all of the sanding and repeated filling I've done.
Must be a labor of love...that only an Iowa Fan would understand !

Lookin good. Not many people would go to all the trouble of redoing the Tamiya kit's bow . I know I certainly wouldn't .I've built both the tamiya Missouri and New Jersey kits, although I had to get rid of them when I moved back to the states from Mexico.

The first picture is of parts for the USS Iowa. All washed and set aside to dry. Isn't watching parts dry fun? They are ready for primer and paint. The parts that have two colors on them get a coat of Tamiya Gray primer. I still want to add the Navy Blue paint the hull this Saturday.



The next pictures are of parts for the modern New Jersey. Just over 2 hrs of tape work and this is all I got done. Tomorrow I'll start on the hull.
I hope to be able to paint the decks Saturday. Then on to the decks.

Tonight I was standing at the stove cooking my dinner when my wife said something to me. As I turned to look at her while she was speaking to me , I saw a familiar outline on the wall. There on the wall was her spoon collection and in this collection was a spoon with an Iowa outline on it. The USS Missouri in her measure 32/22d camo.

I had to share this with you.

Tonight I did get the parts primed that needed to be, but now I get to take care of my Grandaughter while the familly goes to the Seahawk game. The rest will have to wait till tomorrow.
