I've decided to do something similar to the changes made in the diorama in the link I posted. I'm going to change the twin 5" for single mounts but I'm keeping the Phalanx as I'm not up to scratch building Goalkeepers.
I'me going to add a rear mast and add a few new domes and would love to have an Osprey on the back but can't find one in 1/350th - perhaps a couple of Harriers instead
Sea base is done and I'm waiting on the PE and the single mounts from WEM before I start on the rest. Might get my Fletcher finished in the mean time...

Well, it finally happened. At approximately 0830 EDT on Saturday September 30th I put down the paint brush and said to myself: "Self, it's done!".
I decided that while I could spend time doing more on the USS New Jersey, it was over! At 1030 I had it entered in the IPMS PennConn 2006 competition. I was pleasantly surprised when it took the gold in the 1/400 or larger military category. I was even more surprised when it took Best In Category... Ships.
I learned a lot during this build, mostly what not to do. I must thank many of you on this forum for your help, advice, comments, pictures, etc. This was my first ship build and not much made sense when I started. I did soon realize that you have to be a bit crazy! After that, what started out as a basic OOB build ended up with PE, anchor chains, new portholes, cloth flags, custom decals, etc etc etc.
I will try to post pictures soon. My photographic talent needs some fine tuning, or my camera is too sensitive. I cannot get a good depth of field and only parts of the pictures are sharp... the rest are blurred. But I will continue to try this weekend.
I have no misgivings about my effort. I am pleased with the outcome, but am a loooooooooong way from TamiyaCom or IPMS Nationals!
I have the USS Missouri and the USS Yorktown (both 1/350) on the bench and maybe sometime in the next several years I can complete one or both of them! Hopefully, much sooner.
Thanks again to all of you who (as Tony says) help to make this fun!

Eduard New Jersey photo etch
Hi,
I was just wondering if anyone has used the new Eduard set for the New Jersey? I am trying to decide if I should get their set, the GMM set or the set by Tom's Modelwork. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
I am also wondering about the Lionroar set for the BB-55. Anyone know if they plan on doing a set for the New Jersey (or other sister ships)??
Thanks and any help would be greatly appreciated.
Sean

1/350 Missouri returns...
Hi Guys,
Here are some pics of my Tamiya 1/350 Missouri; as she looks today.
All of the superstructure sub-assemblies are not permanently attached...yet.

I have done some modifiying of the bow; mostly a narrowing procedure.
I have also re-started adding on some superstructure minute surface details to make the model look more like the late war photos I've seen in many books and on the web; very useful!
Onward!

excellent job Tony
Is the Photoetch(?) window frame on the bridge included in the set your using? Can't wait to see more, especially after seeing your 1/700 New Jersey

Great job, Tony!
Neat that you decided to take on the challenge of the chubby bow. That is the one thing about the Tamiya kit that always bugged me, mostly because it is a very difficult fix.

Hi Guys,
Timmy,
I will answer your question asbestos I can
.
The modernized Missouri had the most "non-skid", of the Iowas'.
In this picture, there is NO non-skid at all. Apparently, the wood planking was never removed, just covered. This is supposition.
Where there once was, it appears there is no longer. Was this stuff rolled on in a matt form? I wonder.
This picture is a recent pic from her final resting place...too bad!

Avery,
The GMM set for the Tamiya kit does include the bridge windows and instructions on how to build the armored conning tower to be seen inside.
Steve,
Thanks for the compliment.
Take care Guys, Tony
ps...more to come
