Re: Model Monkey Catalog
Good one Steve,
Thanks for the detailed response. It will come in handy when I move on to other ship projects.
I should have explained that Im working with the BoGP drawings for the USS Yorktown CV-5 and used the 1/700 scale drawings in Roger Chesneaus book and the measuring tool in Acrobat Reader to to figure out that the PDF files I have are in 1/152 scale if they were printed at 100% zoom.
But this would seem to indicate that the drawings were enlarged when they were scanned. So I worked with your method and determined
1) Stations are 4 feet apart.
2) Reader Tool converted 20 stations (80 ft) to 160.10 mm
3) dividing 127 mm by 160.10 mm gives approximately .79 as the zoom factor
So I guess its as Saul says, Its all good man.
Thanks again for the response and the lesson in stations which led to some self taught lessons on stems and Forward and Aft Perpendiculars. All of which will come in handy Im sure.

Re: Model Monkey Catalog
Thank you, Pascal!
Happy to announce we've released two new models.
1/350 scale modernized bridge for battleship USS Iowa BB-61 as it appeared circa 1989. The model is intended to help build a modernized USS Iowa BB-61 from the Tamiya 1/350 scale USS New Jersey BB-62 or USS Missouri BB-63 (1991) kits.
1/32 scale Bristol Beaufighter mid-war Radar Operator's Station. The model features Airborne Interception Radar Mk.IV equipment and bin-fed 20 mm Hispano-Suiza cannons. The model is intended to help detail the interior of classic Revell 1/32 scale Beaufighter kits. An early Beaufighter radar operator's station, two different cockpits, dihedral tailplanes and a torpedo are also available now.

Re: Model Monkey Catalog
Yamato fans! Happy to announce an accurately shaped and highly detailed primary rudder for models of Imperial Japanese Navy battleships Yamato and Musashi, and aircraft carrier Shinano, is now available in 1/350 scale and 1/200 scale.
The model's overall shape and dimensions match scaled drawings published in the 2017 edition of "Anatomy of the Ship: Battleships Yamato and Musashi" by Janusz Skulski and Stefan Draminski. The shell plating and screwhead pattern detail are consistent with Janusz Skulski's line drawings and the real Musashi rudder as it appears in modern video and photos of the wreck published by Paul G. Allen in 2015.
The model is accurately sized and shaped with extensive screwhead detailing.
Nameplates for Yamato, Musashi and Shinano are also available, 3D-printed in your choice of real metal or inexpensive, paintable acrylic.

Re: Model Monkey Catalog
Happy to announce we've added Yamato, Musashi and Shinano auxiliary rudder models in 1/200 and 1/350 scales to the catalog. The real ships had two rudders, both along the centerline, a large main rudder and a smaller auxiliary rudder positioned forward of the primary rudder.
The auxiliary rudder models have been paired with primary rudder models released a few days ago. The rudders are sold together as a set.

Re: Model Monkey Catalog
USS Saratoga CV-3 fans! Happy to announce a set of 5 Bofors bays is now available in 1/350 scale to help convert your Trumpeter USS Saratoga CV-3 kit to Sara's 1944-1946 late-war appearance.
The two Lexington-class aircraft carriers, USS Lexington CV-2 and sistership USS Saratoga CV-3 were originally fit with recesses on the upper hull sides used to store five of the ships' very large utility boats, a few of which were 50 feet long. The recesses to stow these large boats were called "boat pockets". There were four boat pockets on the port side and one boat pocket on the starboard side, aft.
In December, 1943, USS Saratoga CV-3 reported to Hunter's Point Naval Shipyard, San Francisco, California, for a major, month-long, mid-war refit. As part of the refit, her boat pockets were extensively modified becoming anti-aircraft weapons stations for 40 mm quadruple Bofors cannon mounts. Ammunition clipping rooms were built within the pockets and shielded sponsons were constructed extending outward from the hull. This set of 5 models captures the pockets as they were reconfigured as weapons stations.
A set of highly detailed pre-war boat pockets for Lexington and Saratoga are presently in design. That set will depict the pockets' original configuration as boat-stowage stations.
A late-war island, funnel, 5"/38 cal. twin-gun mounts (turrets), rudder, and nameplates for both Lexington-class ships are also available.

Re: Model Monkey Catalog
In addition to the USS Saratoga CV-3 Bofors Bays shown above, we've also released a Bristol Beaufighter late-war maritime strike fighter/day fighter Observer's Station in 1/32 scale, intended for the classic Revell kit.
This new station model joins two previously-released Beaufighter station models (an early-way and a mid-war radar operator station, both for night fighters), two different cockpits (early-war and late-war), dihedral tailplanes, thimble radome, and a torpedo.

Hi Steve, Any chance you have plans to rescale the Saratoga bays to 1/700 for the Tamiya kit. Don't know if it would even be possible. Thanks

Re: Model Monkey Catalog
Hi Frank, great question. I hope to be able to offer the set in 1/700 scale, too. That will take some doing but if successful, I'll announce it here and on Facebook.Frank Fowler wrote:Hi Steve, Any chance you have plans to rescale the Saratoga bays to 1/700 for the Tamiya kit. Initial 1/700 scale test prints have not been successful; the flight deck supporting girders become too fragile in 1/700 scale to print properly, so much work needs to be done to try to make the models printable in 1/700.
Assuming that redesign work will be successful, please help with a measurement to make sure the new bays will fit a 1/700 scale Tamiya kit as intended. I have a 1/700 scale Fujimi Saratoga model in hand but not the Tamiya kit. If you have a Tamiya kit and access to a digital caliper, please measure the distance from the bottom of the kit's bay parts to the top of the hull part where the flight deck parts rest, as shown in the photo below.
Unlike the Trumpeter Lexington-class kits' boat pockets, the 3D-printed bays do not have an overhead because on the real ship the bottom of the flight deck is the bays' overhead. That's why you see exposed transverse girders that jut out into space on the 3D-printed models. Those girders are intended to support the flight deck. Not having an overhead also helps make the bay parts much easier to paint.
Cheers!

Re: Model Monkey Catalog
Hi Steve,
Thanks for the reply and consideration for 1/700. I took out the Tamiya and measured the cutouts with my digital calipers. Each one is 0.2 inch; however, the bottom of each is not a straight line like the Trumpeter kit nor are they uniform in shape like the Trumpeter kit. The one pocket on the Starboard side is close to uniform like the Trumpeter and the 4 on the Port side are all different from each other. If you like I can take some photos and email them to you or post them on your Facebook page.

Re: Model Monkey Catalog
Thanks so much, Martin!
And thanks to Frank for sending photos of the Tamiya 1/700 scale Saratoga kit's hull parts!
The way Tamiya chose to design the bay openings of their otherwise excellent 1/700 scale kit is a bit of an unpleasant surprise. The Tamiya kit's hull includes some of the same features that we include with our bays, such as splinter shielding and the outer wall of clipping rooms, etc., and a lip on the inside of the hull that may complicate fit. Since the Tamiya hull and our bays both include some of the same features and have a problematic lip, it would seem that rescaling our existing 3D-printed 1/350 Bofors bays will not produce a set of bays that will fit the Tamiya kit. To use our rescaled bays with a Tamiya kit, the modeler would have to cut away significant features of Tamiya kit's hull, a task most customers would reject. The model ship market generally prefers drop-fit replacements requiring no hull cutting. This means that a new 3D Bofors bay design would be required specifically to fit the Tamiya kit. Since the design queue is full for the foreseeable future, I'm going to pass on a new 1/700 scale Tamiya kit-specific design project for now in favor of other projects with better sales potential. I am not saying no to 1/700 scale Bofors bays for the Tamiya kit, just not now.
Very sorry for any disappointment.
