Yes, of course we can do that, although humans were less big and fat or obese than now in percentage. But also less tall.

Indeed, on-board rations kept them slim However, I was thinking of some pictures of older petty and warrant officers in the austro-hungarian navy that I have seen, who were decidedly more portly. I suppose it was similar in other navies before the times of obsession with 'physical fitness' and when an 'embonpoint' was a sign of socio-economic achievement and not a health detriment.

I spent 2 days on the cables that hold the spars of the Bullivant starboard anti-torpedo net. I drew, printed, installed the front pulleys, and the supports of the net's sea station.

I had fun comparing the Bismarck and the Bretagne which are on the same scale. 20 years of evolution in design and shipbuilding techniques separate them.

251 m for the Bismarck, displacement 41,700 tons: 166 m for the Bretagne, 23,500 tons.

Back to the drawing board.

I have started to draw the boats, thanks to those who provided me with plans.

Not too many period photos of these boats in general. But if you look around, you can find some.






















The 11mt steam launch to start with. It will be 55 mm long.

















One day to get to this point, not too bad.

very elegant-- you were quite well armed with photo information !

in your image of the two launches hanging the boat boom-
-the round bilge design is well reflected in the considerable angles of roll
in the seemingly not huge swell... !

I can only admire the elegance of the lines of the steam launch-- I have similar looking boats on my 1/350 Bouvet

along with some sailing gigs-- did Bretagne carry sailing Gigs? ( pardon old fuzzy photo)

The steamers carried impressive awnings and sprayhoods

the heat from the boiler under teh awning must have been considerable



The whalers are also very attractive with the handsome sheerlines...

Are you sure the last one is a whaler? My understanding was that whalers are double-enders and mainly used to land through surf, if needed. At least that's how we defined/used them in the German navy.

The term "Whaleboat" has been overused in relation to the original pointed bow and stern boat.

In France, it still refers to a lifeboat. It has become a generic term.

Yes, and relatively easy to use.

I drew the steam engine today and the rear benches. I've almost finished, no need to put much more detail. There are still the fenders to be placed on the planking, the hoops for the cover.

There will be two such launches on the battleship, I may cover one with a half-top probably.
