Wow, one of my favourite class of ships. Who is the provider of the kit, or is it Scratch. It is on one of my wishlists to Trumpeter.

I am going to scratch it in 1/500 using a Hasagawa main battery. The only photo's I can find are at a distance and not clear. I think the actual vessel will be called HMS Ulysses. I just finished rereading the Alistair MacLean novel. John

I'm thinking of doing the Ulysses as well in 1/350 scale. I have a lot of spare turrets from Mini Hobby HMS Prince of Wales kits. Any suggestions though as to which would be a good kit for the hull?

I thought of building a Dido , using a hull from the old frog Tiger kit.It has a similar shape, but for a 1/350th Dido it would need lengthening by about 1"and the transom stern of the tiger, would need to amended to the cruiser stern of a Dido.It is spot on for beam , hope this helps

the hard chine along the bow is very difficult to mold. If a kit hull can be used, this problem would be solved. They really are graceful designs and I look forward to seeing yours.

Ok, I'm new to this forum, so be gentle with me

My grandfather served on a Dido class light cruiser, HMS Hermione in WW2.
I'm looking for any models of this ship, if there are not any models does anyone know where I can get plans for it? So I can attempt to scratchbuild one!

White Ensign did a 1/700 kit of HMS DIdo. If you can get one it might be a starting point.

There is also a Commander Series Dido class in 1/350 (www.commanderseries.com) listed as HMS Sirius.

am I right in assuming that most of the Dido class cruisers looked similar to HMS dido/ HMS Sirius?

So I could adapt one of these kits to create HMS Hermione?

Hi Paul,

Either of the kits should do it as both kits feature the ships with the same overall fit as Hermione, both are early war so should be close to the original arrangements. There are likely to be detail differences - particularly with deck houses and anti-aircraft armament - both of which changed through the war as well, just depends on what references you've got and how far you want to go with the detailling.

The WEM kit will be a much easier build needing less clean up and detailling, the Commander Series one requires more work, but will get you there with some effort. This is my Commander Series Sirius modified as HMS Pheobe:

It should appear in the gallery fairly soon with some information on the extras I added - not all will apply to Hermione but many additons would still apply.

Hello Phil,

According to her colour profile in Ensign 2 "Dido Class Cruisers", by Alan Raven and H.Trevor Lenton,second pull-out, where it is written "It is thought that the pattern that was carried by Cleopatra was almost identical", and Cleopatra's camo drawing in Warship Perspectives, Camouflage volume one: Royal Navy 1939-1941 p.25, by Alan Raven, the colours are probably the following :

MS1, MS3, MS4a, B5 and B6.
