A wise man once said/wrote to me: "barking mad - but brilliant".
I believe it applies here as well

Not entirely convinced on that 2nd gangway.
Although it wouldn't be uncommon to have it ( most of the time there is a short and a long gangway onboard),
-in this case the shadows of the forward one might be cast by benches as well.

There appears to be a shorter? bench just forward of that gangway that seems to cast a similar, but shorter shadow.

My 2 cents...

@ Neptune....

Hmnnn.... I shall re-examine that...-
- I had thought that as they had
( sometimes ) a huge load of passengers to load and unload ( at every stop )

( Lorna doone was licensed for nearly 900 passengers..(!)
that the 2 x gangways might be deployed as one for boarding and one for disembarking

anyhows... the tightness of the Horizontal lines in the shadow MIGHT INDEED be a bench.... Hmnnn!

=========================================================
a bit of progress.... mostly annotated images

that have been stared at and re-re-re-re stared at... to try and glean how
the benches were placed.

in view of above;
seating midships LD.jpg
so far the longitudinal benches are in place ( but not yet ' toned down' )
P1010487.jpg
Seat Bench B took some finding...( as seen above ahead of the mast )

along with the life rafts stacks around the large cowl vent
identified by passengers sitting not on benches or deck-chairs...
seating LD bow.jpg
The aft seats have had some thin paint and placed onboard the vessel
P1010477.jpg
P1010478.jpg
The mast was made... ( 0.5 mm tubing )
P1010485.jpg
On the bridge wings they had polished engine room telegraphs
LD bridge.jpg
P1010480.jpg
and...
alas it does seem I reached the limits of my work-bench-point-and-shoot camera

so apologies for VERY poor image enlarged ...

I made a lovely binnacle- complete with brass domed compass housing
with the red/green magnetic balance balls-- but even I cannot see it anymore !

The wheel picked up the flash and as such looks a most odd colour in the photo-
-not so in real life !!
P1010483.jpg
meanwhile a photo of sistership SOLENT QUEEN ( ex Melton ex Queen of Thanet )

with a full load onboard...!

==|> showing almost ALL deck detail obscured by peksy passengers !!

started making davits now-- ... more progress son

What a beauty!
I love how you identify individual pieces of equipment in the not-so-great-quality photographs and then scratchbuild them using ingenious solutions. It is so educational. I love the smart looking benches!

Incredibly fine detailing Jim! :thumbs_up_1: :thumbs_up_1: :thumbs_up_1:

The benches turned out great, and they add a lot to the overall look of the ship.

I thought of you and your project when I saw this beautiful painting.

It shows a paddlesteamer being passed by the Cunard liner RMS Aquitania. A painting by Colin Verity, dated 1924. Probably near Fawley.

Thank you for thinking of me!

I have been busy--( between classic cars - family and a small health hiccup...)

with... forming and painting very small people ==> passengers...pah!

Naval crew uniforms are soooo much easier to deal with in 1/700 ....than pesky civilians.... !

all wearing different coloured clothes--some with children...
arghhh!

I used PE figures--

Just after World War 2 to early 1950's.....
British civilians were not that well fed... and mostly they were slim .

Resin and 3 D figures just looked a bit.... errr..... " big "....

the PE figures ( from a variety of sources ) had some white glue to give them some depth. -

--and heads, arms , torsos and legs
were altered and bent to give some variety of poses

I enclose images of the status quo

==> next stage is the greeny grey sea... .and then rigging..... and completion.

I reckon anther 3-4 weeks

Cheers

Great job with the figures! The populated paddlesteamer looks real! I love the tall elegant lady with child (midship /starboard). Just incredible :cool_2:

Beautiful work, Jim.

This ship comes to life. It's hard to imagine a model without sailors and passengers in it in this case. I'm not a fan of ghost ships.

Can't wait to see the rest of this project.
Take good care of yourselves.

Good day all

Honest- I have not fallen off a cliff,
though have been dealing with a health issue, and combated an extremely Hot June
( sunniest June ever on record in the UK)
which renders the model.room untenable as it faces South.

July has returned to usual service in the UK- indifferent weather- Days of sun , Days of rain

so I have returned to the bench

3 images only today--

so a summary...
I removed the ' spare ' gangway -( thank you Neptune :thumbs_up_1: )
and made another-- slightly shorter - bench

Thereafter I installed the 2 x deck floodlights, these are delicate
and fiddly to install on to the top of the paddleboxes
P1010808.jpg
I rigged the stays for the two funnels before doing the shrouds
and halyards

Initially I thought I would make life easy for myself

and use the Thinnest 0.047 mm Nitinol wire ( Modellkasten)
but on this diminutive ship even that skinny wire looked colossal!!
thin and thinner .jpg
So I resorted to my favourite media and used stretched sprue
same old method--
viewtopic.php?f=4&t=37536

just pulling it quicker to make it MUCH finer !

thereafter I set to levelling the gaps between the edge of the 'paper water'
and the Hull-- I have used successfully ( for decades) white glue for this
Usefully--when applied its white ( so I can see it!) but dries clear
P1010801.jpg
P1010792.JPG
thereafter once dry--I set about painting the wake and the sea

Next update in a few days

Your ways with ultra-fine rigging with streched sprue keeps baffling me with amazement! :worship_1: It just looks so simple, but it requires a very fine technique, a very secure hand and the patience of an archangel!

Thank you gentlemen;

I deliberated and wrought my hands for some time...
the vexed question of " paddle-steamer wake pattern,
at differing speeds, differing paddle wheel designs, differing hull shapes etc
how much by foaming white 'thrash' aft of the paddle wheels is realistic

Views of paddle-steamers from above are surprisingly rare-- and then mostly of
the Waverley- a large British seagoing paddler of nearly 19 knots- and only a few
of the images are of the vessel them at high speed...
The large fleets of Swiss Lake paddle steamers-- fine vessels that they are
have top speeds up to 17 knots-- but cruise at around 10- 12 knots ( tp reduce wash on lake shores)
and the few overhead images bear that out

a few images as examples...Waverley's paddles... when the dig into the water seem to make a distinctive
pattern aft of the paddle wheels both sides-- which appears to differ somewhat from the
" thrashier " more turbulent white water pattern of Lorna Doone...
Waverley being a 1948 build I think has more efficient "blades"
than the 1914 designed Lorna Doone and her sister Solent Queen.

a few image to support my thoughts...

PS Waverley
wake 1.jpg
wake 5.jpg
wake2.jpg

Solent Queen ( ex Queen of Thanet )
wake 4.jpg
wake 3.jpg
Lorna Doone ( ex Queen of Kent )
wake 7.jpg
wake 6.jpg

So onwards ...
I eventually chose to create an amalgam of the various images
but leaning more towards the thrashy water of the 1915 ex minseweepers,
charging down the Solent at 15-16 knots....

The model is essentially completed -
aside from a last check-over ...

below are some snapshots with the workbench camera ...
I will do some ' proper ' photos in good light with the SLR on a tripod..!
giving proper depth of field and less wide angle distortion that the point and shoot

P1010815.jpg
P1010820.jpg
P1010823.jpg
P1010822.jpg

Its been quite the journey...

it all seems a very long way from this stage....

In this photo, you can see the small curved waves produced by the paddle, faster in the center than on the outside of the wake, forming a curved wave. Looks pretty typical to me.

Depending on the speed of the vessel, it must be different of course.
