Calling all USN Attack Cargo Ship (AKA) fans

Hello all,
I'm new to the board and ship modeling. My father served on the USS Sarita AKA-39 in WWII and I would like to build a model of his ship. As with any modeling project research is needed so I have started a blog with information I have. You can visit it at:

I will be posting another blog with my modeling progress soon. I have plans of the ship and will be scratch building in 1/350 scale.
Just lurking on this site has given me enough inspiration to get started, this is a talented group of modelers. I'm sure I will be looking here for answers as I progress.

I have seen that kit but 1/700 is a bit too small for me. I would really like to do it 1/192 but that's just a bit too big, so 1/350 looks like the right size. There are plenty of parts for the guns and boats available in 1/350 as well.

More than a decade since the last post on this topic.

I served in AKA19 in the mid 1960s.

Built a model of balsa while aboard. (Can't have a better way to get it right, right?) How apart are the doors? Go measure the real ones.

Used the 1/8th "ships of plans" for the basics.

Presented the model to the skipper - An Airdale - so sad.

I recently finished Project Artemis Class AKA.....

I've uploaded plans for the Artemis Class AKA I found at the website of the US National Archives to the Ship Design Drawings collection on the Webarchive:

I am looking to build a number of the ships involved in Operation Deep Freeze,starting with USS Arneb. Is there a commercially available kit? If not I will scratch build in 1/700 if someone can give me a link to general arrangement drawings.

David Angelo did not have any kits left, but did send drawings and provide LCMs, LCVPs and photo etch - top man! My plan now is to scratch build USS Arneb on either Operation High Jump or Deep Freeze, possibly accompanied by a scratch build of USS Glacier.
