biercemountain,

Thank you for confirming my hazy recollection: I am not gaga yet!

I would not like to argue with your Reference but the "low funnels" on German warships seems a bit contradictory: all images of German small and large cruisers, as well as capital ships, that I've seen, show that their funnels were no shorter than any other navies.

Theoretically, any naval architect of the time could have designed a telescopic funnel and a ship yard executed it but how practical it would have been is open to question. Think heat and expanded metal.

That said, the idea of lowering telescopic funnels was intended to "remove" them as an aid to the opposition's using them to establish the inclination of the target: a necessary element in achieving a fire control solution. Someone and it may again have been "Jacky" Fisher, also wanted to eliminate masts, or at least keep the number fitted to just one, for the same purpose.

Be that as it may, weren't the "Invincibles" originally completed with short funnels for the reasons stated before the height had to be increased in order to reduce the smoke problem?

I was saddened to hear of the passing of Ken who posted in this thread; earlier this year. A great friend of my father, the world gets a little less colourful in his absence and I'll miss the sharp sense of humour! I am not sure that many children of crewmen of these ships remain now, we have the photos, historical record and the memories left behind; but I am heartened to hear the tradition of service continues on in the family. New Zealand was a lucky ship, and I believe his father was aboard her through nearly all the battles in the war. Rest in peace, we will miss you, from those of us in Australia.

Hello, all. I'm working on a trio of 3d printed 1/144 scale models of HMS Invincible. I modeled the hull using scans of some of the plans that the Royal Navy museum has online. The first one will probably remain a static model. The second hull is going to be used a a plug for a mold to make copies in fiberglass and I'm planning to add radio control and rotating turrets to the third one. I was given permission to use a model of her superstructure which represents her appearance in late 1914. I'd like for the RC model to reflect her appearance at the battle of Jutland. Are there any pictures or references that would help me update the superstructure details? I'm also wondering if there are good references to the types of ship's boats she'd have carried?

PS. Here's a mock up of the superstructure I'm currently printing.
PPS. I have a thread with more pictures here: viewtopic.php?f=27&t=376344

the wing turrets' spacing does not look right according to the plans I sent you? what material(s) are you going to make the various decks out of?

I took a guess : ) Does anyone know what frame numbers they were close to or centered on?

Good Morning:

I seem to recall the HMS Invincible thread had a couple posts of available kits/scales and links to builds.

I cannot seem to locate those posts with the crossover to a joint thread. Have they been deleted or put somewhere that I am missing?

WB

Maybe this post by Martin? viewtopic.php?f=47&t=33994#p205187 (first page, 2/3rds of the way down)

Usually a post like that would be the first post, but since this is a merged thread, the time order means older posts show up first.

Unfortunately, the links to kits in that post are long dead : (

The 1/350 scale version from Iron Ship Wrights is listed as in stock on http://ironshipwrights.com/ships_350.html
and there's the 1/700 scale kit from Flyhawk available from multiple sources here : https://www.scalemates.com/kits/flyhawk ... n--1306578

Combrig's website lists the 3 ships in the class at 1/700 scale on this page https://combrig-models.com/index.php/pr ... -1860-1918 but, the links to suppliers in the US are dead.

I don't believe that HP's 1/700 scale version is available anymore.

Hope that helps.

Xanther,
Regretfully, I know of no reliable plan for the Jutland Invincible, which is appalling. I have hunted for half a century. I'd wager there exists a 1916 plan of her held by the UK National Maritime Museum, or by the Portsmouth Naval Base Museum. There is a fascinating photo of her from 1915 that likely was her Jutland state. it was available from the painter Mark Postlethwaite's photo archive. I bought a copy about 20 years ago. Since then his collection has been acquired by Wingleader publishing. A minimum yearly subscription to use the archive costs £80.You no longer can search it, and order photos.

The photo shows that by 1915 Invincible had a rare enclosed and glassed compass platform. The forward spotting top was of a different shape-from 1914, and it was glassed, like all the Jutland battlecruisers. The 4-in. guns were removed from the tops of the midships turrets. All the turrets except A likely had the large offset rangefinder positions, like her sisters (A had the centered, smaller RF cover.). She still had the torpedo net gear, which she still carried at Jutland (See the Jutland photos of her on the web---the booms for the torpedo net gear are about all that one can see clearly.). Her forward superstructure looks basically the same as 1914. A photo of her quarterdeck from 1915 shows a high-angle AA gun fitted there, and a variety of equipment which I could not identify. Inflexible had a curious canvas tent on her quarterdeck all through the war.

Helpful, is a photo of Inflexible from what must have been 1916. She is in the dark gray used in 1916 (the fleet went over to a light gray after Jutland), and she still has the anti-torpedo net gear, which was removed right after Jutland. Note the canvas tent on the quarterdeck.

Cheers, Jeff

@ Jeff Spencer - Thank you for the info. I just cut a new set of plywood decks for one of my 3DP I-Boats, this past weekend. I'll be getting back to that project eventually.
