Question...KM Prinz Eugen
Have a question...Wana scratchbuild the KM Prinz Eugen 1:100 scale.
These are the plans:
http://www.dreadnoughtproject.org/plans ... ugen_1940/
However, there is no plans for the ribs.
Is it possible to scratchbuild without the ribs? What other options do i have?

The Floating Drydock website has a set of plans for the Prinz Eugen for sale in either 1/384 or 1/192 scale that have hull stations.
RS-PREUG/32 KM Printz Eugen 1945 A-D,F,P 1/384 $10.00
RS-PREUG/16 Same as above in 1/192 $20.00
You could always have the hull stations enlarged to your scale.

Try to take a look at http://www.prinzeugen.com since they have blueprints of the cruiser there that can be of some help to you.

hi toiletfreak,
Maybe you can visit http://www.anb-online.org This is an Italian site with hundreds of plans. Even a plan of PE is in their catalogue , scale 1/100 , 4 sheets in total(item n 1061). Perhaps you can e-mail them and ask what you really want.
Regards,
Ludwig

Re: Question...KM Prinz Eugen
There are a couple of sections shown on these plans which - if you redrew the plan and profile at the scale you wanted, would provide a guide to the hull shape down to the waterline that you could then extrapolate for much of the ship.toiletfreak wrote:Have a question...Wana scratchbuild the KM Prinz Eugen 1:100 scale.

However, if I had no access to images and plans for the frame sections, I'd be looking at buying a model (Heller, I think, do one at 1/400th which would keep the maths easy), cut it up, draw around the bits and then photo-enlarge to suit.

Hi Ludwig,Ludwig wrote:hallo Andy,
You can do that , but what if the hull of the model (Heller) isn't correct?? You end up with a faulty hull , all that work(and money) for nothing.

Ludwig
I agree that there are issues with using commercial kits for scaling, but without access to the original plans there's a degree of faith that we have to accept with regards to any secondary source...whether they're plans, kits, building on someone else's glassfibre hull, etc.
That said, the evidence from the plans listed at the start of this thread is seemingly enough to provide a good guide to the hull width at the deck, and the depth of each hull section. That's 50% of the hard work done already. For much of the hard part of the hull (the turn of the bilge, any under waterline flare) that you'd be relying on a kit for additional info in this instance, will, ultimately, be under water in a RC model.
Now perhaps there's an argument (and it's one that, for example, Ron's using with his Moffet's bilge keels, and many others have done regarding rudder and prop sizes, even the draught) that we have to occasionally accept non-scale "fixes" because we can never scale water, yet still feel satisfied that we have a scale model.
Personally speaking, given the apparent quality of the plans detailed at the start of this thread, I'd be holding out to find good (as in confident) plans of the hull form that's missing - but if I really wanted a Prinz Eugen, and this was all I could get/afford, then I'd use them, backed up by the method I mentioned earlier.
WAY back, I scaled up the Airfix 1/600th Warspite to 1/200th scale, and used it - the plastic model - as my sole guide to making an RC Warspite that, on reflection, must have been full of scaling errors and enlarged mistakes, but the overall effect was not a bad one. "Good semi-scale", I suppose.

Andy

Perfect...though since toiletfreak (I shudder to ask about his name!) wants a 1/100th scale model, he might want to take the approach that I did with my Dreadnought's hull (where the model is 1/72nd, and the plans I had are 1/192nd, at best, for the hull). In order to decrease the errors over scaling up, you can redraw a plan, fair the curves and take off new frames from this.Ludwig wrote:Admiral Hipper above drawing, Prinz Eugen the lower drawing , can you do something with these?
