Black Sea Fleet Gray

Post by El Santo »

After staring at photos and paint chips until my eyes glazed over, I'm reasonably satisfied with the following approximations for the colors used by the Soviet/Russian navy:

Baltic Fleet gray ~ Intermediate Blue FS 35164
Northern Fleet light gray ~ Medium Gray FS 35237
Northern Fleet dark blue-gray ~ Non-Specular Sea Blue FS 35042

Also, I'm mostly convinced that the Pacific Fleet's gray is basically the same as the Baltic Fleet's.

The Black Sea Fleet, though? I'm pretty much stumped. My reading on the subject consistently suggests that the Black Sea Fleet favors a lighter shade than the other fleets, and most photos seem to bear that out. Most photos also seem to support an interpretation as a more or less neutral gray. But even taking those notions as my starting point, I can see a case for using any shade from Gull Gray FS 36440 to Neutral Gray FS 36270 as a stand-in, and I've seen outlier photos here and there that could argue for something rather bluer instead (like one of the Ghost Grays, maybe?). Do any of you folks have a favorite close-enough match for Black Sea Gray?
