Calling all HMS Warspite fans
I am looking for paint reference pictures etc. for ships utility boats, I am not sure where the waterline would be so as to mask off accurately. I have the Trumpeter 1:350 Warspite and have been using Colorcoats royal navy hobby paint. this is my first ship build and post here, please don't keel haul me

Re: Warspite and Malaya camouflage.
This was asked somewhere... "Moonlit nights were a favourite for air raids but, in August 1940, there was a period where there was no moon. Both Warspite and Malaya were therefore put into the floating dock for essential maintenance. Warspite had her peacetime light grey painted over with a camouflage pattern".

I just saw this, and thought it might be of interest to somebody here. Photo of Malaya in drydock circa 1937, displaying an exceedingly dark underhull-- just barely lighter than her boot topping. Maybe the same Peacock & Buchan gray anti-fouling paint that Hood wore?

Unlikely: Malaya was not a Peacock and Buchan ship.El Santo wrote:I just saw this, and thought it might be of interest to somebody here. Also, where has the idea that Peacock and Buchan's grey antifouling was that dark come from? All the evidence is that it was a grey of around the same RF as Home Fleet grey, perhaps just 2 RF % points lighter.

Could be the result of using orthochromatic film and lower hull was red.El Santo wrote:I just saw this, and thought it might be of interest to somebody here. Re: Calling all HMS Queen Elizabeth class fans
In my case personally, it came from seeing somebody online who acted like they knew what they were talking about propose the US Navy's Dark Gray 5D as a plausible approximation for Peacock & Buchan gray. No idea where the person who suggested that might have got the idea, though.dick wrote:Also, where has the idea that Peacock and Buchan's grey antifouling was that dark come from?

If I have correctly identified the post you are referring to (on Facebook) then I think my good friend Jamie was having a 'senior moment' there!

Incidentally, is there a secondary source yet that collects from the surviving Ships' Covers the information on which vessels received which anti-fouling treatments? Or are those of us who live on the wrong side of the ocean from the relevant archives still stuck groping in the dark?dick wrote:Malaya was not a Peacock and Buchan ship.

Meanwhile, El Santo, you might like to have a look at "Dick's" paper on "RN ships' bottoms and boot-topping 1936 - 1950" over on "Camouflage and Coatings."

How do you think I fell down this rabbit hole in the first place?81542 wrote:Meanwhile, El Santo, you might like to have a look at "Dick's" paper on "RN ships' bottoms and boot-topping 1936 - 1950" over on "Camouflage and Coatings."

Re: Calling all HMS Queen Elizabeth class fans
I have no idea El Santo, my Mk 1 Crystal Ball was hors de combat at the time but never mind that now. However, lacking the desired secondary information meanwhile, I respectfully suggest that you do your own research and ask the one place that might be able to answer your question: the National Maritime Museum. Otherwise, you will have to wait for Dick's projected book in the hope that it does/will.
Personal Opinion: such subjects as researched by Dick are the preserve of very few people. They spend much time on them, usually doing so with their own money and because they are of great personal interest. With good fortune Dick will find a publisher and make a small profit from his work: he is entitled to that. The rest of us can only wait (or ask the primary sources ourselves).

Sorry-- that came out snarkier than I intended. What I was trying to say was Dick's paper was the very thing that originally opened my eyes to the complexity of this issue.81542 wrote:I have no idea El Santo, my Mk 1 Crystal Ball was hors de combat at the time but never mind that now.

Re: Calling all HMS Queen Elizabeth class fans
Hi gents, i am looking for plans for the QE as it was after the 31 refit more or less like N.Oughs model , and mainly the bridge platforms at least , it seems they are hard to be found (if they do exist)!!

Re: Calling all HMS Queen Elizabeth class fans
Try the National Maritime Museum. I, for one, am not aware of a commercially available set for HMS QUEEN ELIZABETH specifically. If the NMM does have them they are likely to be "expensive." Otherwise, you might need to adapt Norman Ough's plans for HMS WARSPITE (circa 1931); which should be available but on disc.

Re: Calling all HMS Queen Elizabeth class fans
Having just purchased copies of HMS Royal Oak plans, I can say that they are currently £60 + VAT per sheet for electronic copies *if* they have already been scanned in and £80 + VAT for the first sheet and £60 + VAT thereafter for each. I didn't ask about paper reproductions, but they do them.
