All the pin-rails epoxied and pinned in place; trim boards installed; new, thicker end-boards made and put-in; Fair-lead log up forward for the down-hauls and such; I moved on to the head's spray-screens.

The ones I had 3D printed curled, and I didn't think would stand up to the stress of being made to work, so, I went back to plan-A, which is to make them basically the way the real one were made.
I made frames, or rails and stanchions of brass rod, CAed them into the head, and backed that up with 5-minute (sorry, don't know what that is in metric) epoxy.
I made the tarpaulin from a snippet of Supplex (the cloth I make sails from); wood strips hemmed into the bottom and aft end; and spray-painted black, front and back.
The hemmed edges were glues to the head-rail and the hull, while the loose portion was pulled over and CAed to the frame. I then laced the tarp to the frame with Dacron sail thread. It'll get a coat of paint brushed on when the port-side catches up.

Finished the spray-screen project. I need to come back and put gratings and seat in to finish it.
Both screens installed. Head need gratings and "seat-of-ease."

I should have done this as a "winter project." but I started painting the crew figures, though I only had flesh-tones from a kit I bought a while back, so I order more colors and paint hands and face in the meantime.

I plan to have upwards of 40 figures doing stuff like these fellas drilling the aft pivot gun

I set up to print another batch of the stock files I have, but four failed to print. The seven that survived got cleaned, mounted on chip-board stands, and primed black.
Meanwhile another batch of "stock" guys was printing

While they were printing I modified some files to give guys straw-hats, and a sponger in a different pose.

The paint scheme, BTW, is based on the only image I could find of an American sailor of the 1850 (I think most other pictures are Brits)

Head Ornamentation

Post by JerryTodd »

Just before leaving town for a couple of months, I had noticed all the head-carving on the actual ship had been removed. I assumed it was to get it out of the way while they were rebuilding the head, but I happened on something about how a 3D scan of the Macedonian figurehead was used to make a wood reproduction to replace the endangered original on it's pedestal at the Naval Academy in Annapolis, and wondered if the Constellation folks were going that route.

With the idea of getting a copy of the scans for myself, I contacted Historic Ships Baltimore, but they acted like they knew nothing about it, so I looked elsewhere.

The company that scanned the Macedonian figurehead offered to print a 2 inch tall 3D model of it for an insane amount of money years ago, and they have a view only version of this file on SketchFab.
On the screen were "related items" one of which was a Billet Head that looked very familiar, and a little digging turned up scans of "Constellation-Filegree".
There's no contact for these people shown, so I took the best screenshots of the items I could manage.
these images I ran through SCULPTOK to generate STLs from them as "height-maps."

I loaded the resulting STL into Blender to reduce the faces down to something manageable using the decimate feature, and save it as an ,OBJ file. I'm having a difficult time learning Blender so I loaded the OBJ into Anim8or (software I know how to use) where I can clean-up and adjust the model to fit my model of Constellation.
