GREYHOUND 2

Post by dragon53 »

GREYHOUND 2---star/writer Tom Hanks is in Australia to begin filming the Apple TV sequel to the 2020 World War II naval movie. The sequel reportedly begins with Commander Krause and the destroyer USS Keeling during the D-Day invasion and its redeployment to the Pacific Theater.

No thanks -

I found the original to be pretty to look at but hard to watch. Nonstop action, little if any development, with a bunch of unrealistic plot devices.

I'll stick to "The Enemy Below", "Action in the North Atlantic" or "Western Approaches" which was outstanding, but any of the three were better than "Greyhound" IMO.

.

It will be hilarious.

I predict that they will battle a non-existent "Nazi" battery, bombard Pointe-du-Hoc and shoot down German fighters. THEN they will do equal wonders in the Pacific.

Bring back The Cruel Sea and the original Das Boot.

The movie captured but some of the stress and strains of command which was brought out in the book. Yes the movie became unrealistic when a 5”38 round dives through the water and hits a U-Boat. So much for depth charges.

I hope this not too political. I am wondering how when the ship gets to the Pacific how they are going to show the ship fighting off Kamikaze attacks ect. that won't offend the woke types in Hollywood ect.
Then before or after the movie comes out some one decides to crash a plane as in 9/11 and it causes a big stink.

I am with reigels and philgollin, it was one of the worst naval warfare films, right up there with the detestable Pearl Harbor.

I want a naval warfare film for thinking adults like The Cruel Sea, Sink the Bismarck, or In Which We Serve, and the blazes with petri bowl deep CGI extravaganzas. Hanks is way past retirement age for a WWII USN DD (69), and looks it. I am astounded a WWII USN DD film skips the Solomons. A truly great Pacific DD film might parallel the experiences of a Japanese DD captain and a USN DD captain in the Solomons from Aug 1942 until Nov 1943. This was the USN's crucible and the IJN's surface warfare triumph and pivot to disaster, maybe end it at Leyte with the triumph of the USN DDs and DEs? The Pacific was the USN's war. The Royal Navy showed how to finish the U-boats and the German big ships in the Atlantic. The Americans have never come to terms with the Solomons naval battles. In Harm's Way was a soap opera with great actors. The UK showed how to do a surface ship naval film with Sink the Bismarck. The special effects were better than CGI, what a triumph. In Harm's Way's effects looked like a comic book.

Interestingly enough, there is a wonderful historical parallel that could serve as the basis of such a film. Captain Tameichi Hara of the IJN fought in seven battles off Guadalcanal and the Solomons, first as Captain of Amatsukaze and then later as Commander of DesDiv 27 aboard Shigure.

Captain Russel Crenshaw Jr. served as gunnery officer and then Exec aboard USS Maury, and participated in numerous actions off Guadalcanal and the Solomons as well. They faced off against each other at Vella Gulf.

They both wrote books about their experiences postwar, and their books are perhaps the finest first hand rememberences that we have regarding the destroyer actions.

That would be perfect, yes. I read all Crenshaw's books, and Hara's book.

A genius would do this in a series, which would open the eyes of Americans to the war-other-than-D-Day-or-the-Ardennes, and the hard row the USN had to hoe to achieve mastery, as they demonstrated that terrible day off Leyte in 1944. We could benefit from contemplation of the formidable enemy the USN faced in early 1942, and the great destroyer leaders like Tanaka and Hara who handed us our heads several times. It's a worthy subject, but the Hollywood Idiots only want to do films about enemies we vanquished in the period of victory. Striving against the odds puts off American producers. Only the UK has the emotional maturity to do a story that begins with a terrible misfortune before the triumphant victory (Sink the Bismarck).

I have managed to find my old PB copy of the book "Little Ship Big War The Saga Of DE343 (USS Abercrombie) by Edward Stafford a fine book that deals with the late 1944-45 war in the Pacific. I also found my copy of "The Big E" also by Stafford another fine book. They both give you what you might call "period feel"

A long time ago I visted the USS Laffey DD 724 and read the book on the ship "The Ship That Would Not Die" F Julian Becton

"The Great War of Archimedes" is a really great movie. It tells the story of Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto tyring to cancel construction of Yamato and Musashi in favor of building aircraft carriers. Still no Samar movie on the horizon.

I can't take most war movies. I have been watching The Unauthorized History ..... with Seth and Jon, formerly captain Bill Toti. I'm on season 5.
