The end of Dragon as we know it

Post by Timmy C »

Posted on their Facebook today: https://www.facebook.com/dragonmodels/p ... YjEmwFAqUl

Acknowledging the announcement doesn't explicitly say they're ending scale model production, the wording certainly seems to suggest so by indicating it in the past tense and that their future lies in "soft" products - digital data, IP, etc. Maybe we'll see their brand on co-branded models in the form of "collabs", like Snowman and Takom.

Edit May 18 2026: Dragon confirms "some" of their moulds have been sold to Zimi Models for continued production:

Well this doesn't bode well for the 1/350 Rodney any time soon. C'mon man!!!

They have been re releasing a lot of old armour kits, have asked about Rodney many times but never a answer.

Perhaps trumpeter will finally issue there's, been in the catalogue for years lol.

Many years ago, Dragon announced a 1/700 CV-65 Enterprise. They went so far as test shots but never released it. I had a test shot in may hands at one point and even made a PE set for the unique elevators on that ship.

Either that tool and all other Dragon tools are now gone forever or they will be bought /transferred to another company and released again. We'll see.

It looks like Dragon's existing kits will indeed be/have been sold off to Zimi Models, to be re-released under the brand "Drami" in similar fashion to what they did with Panda and Kitty Hawk kits: https://old.reddit.com/r/modelmakers/co ... n/oltyb77/

Indeed not, a great pity.

Now over to Trumpeter. Time to step up!! Never thought I would see the 1:350 plastic "R" Classes that Trumpeter have done. So hopefully Nelson Classes follow suit. Options for plenty of different configurations and camouflage schemes for Nelson Classes. Ideal for modelling.

And hopefully Dragon's existing stuff can live on in some form. They had some decent kits.

There's much to like about Dragon kits.

I wonder if Dragon will be providing 3D design services for the gaming industry. Many of their designs for models could be converted to gaming files (with a lot of work).
Have fun, Monkey around. TM

That's a really big step for Trumpeter to make! I think they're comfortable where they're at.

I would have thought "R" Classes would be less likely than Nelson Classes. Yet Trumpeter "R" Classes have appeared.

So I live in joyful hope for the coming of a Trumpeter 1:350 Nelson Class!

Dragon have been moribund for over 10 years now.

They released Scharnhorst, a clutch of German destroyers and USS Independance, in 350 scale, but that was way back, and nothing really since.

If I remember rightly their press release at the time promised a modelling revolution. I think the counter revolutionary forces won.
