Searching for references on ww2 Royal Navy deck fittings

Post by WHIMZ »

Hello all,
Working on a Tamiya 1/350 HMS King George V, the kit is a bit lacking in detail so I've been scratchbuilding weapons and radars to make it look a bit nicer. I've noticed the deck detailing is also lacking, so I go to do some research and for the life of me cannot find any info, drawings or technical detail about any of the following;
-Air Vents/mushroom vents
-Ammo Lockers, general storage
-Hoists
-Cable reels
-Searchlights
-Binoculars
-Life boats

Just to name a few, does anyone know of any references books or sources of information I can use to build these things?
Any info is much appreciated.

So, no single source, but a few things to try. The Lambert series of books by Seaforth contain drawings of some guns, searchlights and other fittings. Not all books relevant to the KGVs and since I’m sitting in the garden with a Rosé not going over them which volume is best (now. maybe later :)). So, all his work on ship’s boats has unfortunately not been issued yet, so have a look at my page here: https://ontheslipway.com/royal-navy-sh ... s-of-wwii/. Not complete but quite a bit of info. The anatomy of the ship series contain drawings too (Aggassiz, warspite, belfast, hood). Perhaps more hit and miss, a drawing you may use here and there. There are also a couple of fantastic KGV builds on britmodeler that could be very helpful?

WHIMZ,

Try to find a copy of Alistair Roach's book "The Life and Ship Models of Norman Ough." It should have most if, not all of what you seek. You should be able to scale up or down from the images in it. It was published in 2016 so if you can't buy a new copy, a second-hand one should be available fairly cheap.
