Vlad,

we talked about this in Telford. Very interesting project and I�m really looking forward to see the next progress. Interesting paintsheme! How did you make the artwork?

hi.

Torben nice to hear from you again, the artwork is done in photoshop. It is based on the paint schemes of Tirpitz and Admiral Hipper, with a little artistic license.

Stefano, I admire you for trying this in 1:400. will you do it full hull or waterline? if you ever get started, keep us informed.

No more progress yet, ive been side-trecked by a computer game, but I think the final verdict will be as above. I will smooth the hull at armour belt level to give a more continuous form, but I will leave the deck, and high bow, as it is. bit of artistic license for ease of building.

Full hull. Replacing the deck planking is what most troubles me. As for admiring... wait the result! I am a real mess.

OK, update. I glued a rectangle of paper over armour belt at the point where the bow joins the hull to make it much more of a smooth curve. I also gave the hull a coat of paint, partly to cover up some of the blemishes, but also to show up new ones I may have missed and need to fix. this is a long way from the final finish but that is deffinately the final shape of it.

If you excuse my messy workbench, there is also a picture of the major superstructure components dry-fitted.

The fore part had a "curious" look.

Vlad, could you made "soft zone" between the 2 parts.

Now this is so very cool. Definately not something I've ever seen attempted before - Vlad, you get ten points for having such an original idea..

My knowledge of how this ship may have looked has always been limited to the few side elevations I have seen... Your model is quite a revelation

so has mine, mostly. I do have one sketch showing the top view and I've included it in this post. I also have the Breyer Battleships book which has a good side drawing. There are however serious discrepencies between the various sketches I have seen of the ship so I am taking quite a bit of artistic license in many cases. The model has been dictated partly by the fact I had to adapt the Tirpitz bow, because I didn't have the confidence to scratchbuild one including all the deck detail.

But one difference for example, Breyer shows the mainmast still on the back of the funnel, and all the 15 cm and 10.5 cm guns replaced with twin 12.7 cm dual-purpose guns....but the sketch I am posting here has a Scharnhorst-style mainmast with the original secondary armament......hmmm

Jef, I'm not quite sure what you mean by "soft zone".

"Soft zone" is the junction between original Gneisenau hull and the new part than you add.

On the drawing, the form on the top view is regular...

Your rebuilt is not so regular...

Hi Vlad,

we talked about your project at Telford too! Nice to see that you waste no time for starting it.

Your example about the second armament of 12.7 or 15.0 cm guns. Breyer wrote about the dual-purpose 12.7 cm, it was not obvious specified to use the 12.7cm. At the time of 1942/1943 the plans for reconstruction provided only to change the main armament. So if you want to be straight to a nearly could be looking of Gneisenau it is better to use the 15.0 cm, also the mast design.

Hi Christian.

nice to see you at Telford and good to hear from you again. I am keeping the mast design, but i will be taking some artistic license with the secondary armament.

As for the bow, I have tried a little more to soften the join line. I have added more strips of paper pulled tight over the top to get a straighter line, and filled the gap up to the hull side. It's a little better than before, and this time I will leave it alone.

As for more progress, here are a few shots of the superstructure parts on a bit of card ready for spray painting. I won't be doing that just yet thought because i want to practice my technique a bit. the PE parts are from WEM. many of the smaller AA guns and a few other things I took from the Tirpitz kit as they are newer, and usually better mouldings. This isn't always the case though as the old Tamiya kit is very good, and some parts were actually finer in the original kit. The aft superstrucutre portholes are drilled. and yes, I know there is a lot of filler on the forward bridge, but it was quite a bad fit.

By the way Steve, ... if you read on the Scharnhorst drawings the name of the researcher and maker, .. than you will be surprised,...

Any help or info I can provide you just feel free, .. on both Scharnhorst and Gneisenau,.... as I can do the same for all the 10 KM major warships, .. so Gneisenau included......

, .... same style as Scharnhorst.

But I do have news for Scharnhorst as well, .. as last year was full of many new discovery about many camouflage schemes

Hey everyone.

I thought it was about time for a progress update, especially after spending a total of around 5/6 hours on this ship over the last week and a half. Most of that was spent painstakingly applying masking tape, as I am getting back into airbrushing. I also used various pencil effects for some light weathering and to make the wood deck more convincing. The resutls on the hull are shown in the pictures below:
