Hi Bill A Loverly piece of detailed work As i've always said it's the nondescript items around the ship that often make the model.

Oh no, you can't do that yet, you have to wait until we get over the basic stuff before you begin the details :doh_1:

Seriously Bill, great job! :thumbs_up_1: :thumbs_up_1:

You and me both Reid.... of course, I will try my hand at scratchbuilding sometime in the next few years. I want to build a model of the USS Sage, AM 111 for my grandad. He was I think an engineer on that ship.

Hehe... Once I'm done with my three other projects, I'll try my hand at scratch building. I have found a set of plans on Floating Drydock for the USS Auk, which was the class leader of the class that the Sage is in. Hopefully that, and any pics I can find on the internet will help. I even have a framed picture of the Sage entering Havanna Harbor in my bedroom.

Fantastic work as usual Bill!!!!! I don't post often but I'm checking all the scratchbuild article when updates are made available. Some people read the journal in the morning but I read the various posts on MW. Much more cheerful reading IMHO

Cheers :wave_1:

Just an Idea

Has anyone ever tried to use Plasti Dip in the black color for their blast bags? Looks just like rubber and you can build up coats (thickness). Instead of vacume forming over clay you could dip the clay mould in the Plasti Dip. It's available at Grizzly.com for around 8 bucks.

You know, that's an interesting idea. I had forgotton about the stuff you are talking about.I am familier with it. However, how will the plasti-dip pull off the mold? Some experimentation would be in order here. I'll stay with what I have for now. Thanks for the tip.Perhaps I'll try that stuff in the future.

Hello again all, and Happy Holidays. :wave_1: Armor belt areas port and stb. now completed except for deck level scupper pipes. Thought you would like to see the port side belt before primer. All areas are styrene with the exception of the degaussing cable, grab irons on the maint. hatches, and small eyelets. These items are metal. I'll now prime this and then get ready to do the boot topping and the bottom of the hull in finish paint. I'll start the photos with a couple of shots of the USS Alabama, basically the same ship. See below................................
Image
Here's the real deal just aft of midships. Note all the little details, which should be reproduced on the model. I'll do my best. The areas I have completed are just below the railing. Note the small bulwark that runs the entire way around the ship. I'll add that after the decks are installed. Then the railings. As you can see, they contain 5 steel cables. I can't find any stantions with 5 holes. If anyone can help, please advise. Otherwise I go with three.
Image
Here's another shot more parallel to port side. Again note all the "stuff".

The next few photos show the model, same side. I won't detail every photo, I think you'll get the idea. Take a look.......................
Image
Here's where the belt begins forward.
Image
A little further down.
Image
Here's the whole belt.
Image
Here's the end of the belt.
Image
A view from fwd. looking aft.
Image
Here's another full view of the armor belt area. I'll now prime this and then mark off the waterline to get ready to do the boot topping and the bottom of the hull. Then we start to paint!! :thumbs_up_1: I am getting there! More to come.................. Stay Tuned....................
I continue on............................. :wave_1: :thumbs_up_1: :lol_spit_1: :lol_spit_1:

Bill,

I'd dig up some photos about those railings and see if she truly had them during the war. I think that maybe the 5-line versions were added after she was made a museum for safety reasons. I know public places with any sort of railing, and even houses built to code, can not have more than a certain amount of space between the horizontals. That coupled with the fact that I can't recall every seeing any photos with 5 line life-lines leads me to believe that this is a post war addition.
