hi guys!

didn`t write a long time, due lack of modelling time, and putting my wisconsin project on hold!

but some of my next projects will be
iowa 1944( diorama with baltimore, hankock, independence and dds and des)
iowa 1984
and wisconsin desert storm

i found an interesting picture

which indicates that new jersey had a different top on the bow..which means i have to rebuild that!

another thing..i recently watched the film UNDER SIEGE with steven seagal which playes on the missouri..when they are firing at the sub, its actually a sodak, with some changes to make it look like a modernized iowa..anyone information on that?

I too have seen Under Siege numerous times. I like the intro music and the first 10 minutes of the movie the best!
Good skill to you when you get re-started.
To all Iowa Fans,
For those of you who have had every right to give me some grief for taking soooooo long on my 1/350 Missouri....well here's some more ammunition!
I have decided to build the Missouri in a multi-ship display with DD449 Renshaw alongside. Actually, I recently purchased a 1/350 Commander Series resin Yard Tug for the third vessel. The YT will be on the port side of Missouri and the Renshaw will be alonside the other, (stbd). This will be a factual depiction of Navy Day, October 27 1945 when President Truman came aboard Missouri...see pic...

Here are the two unfinished Tamiya kits side by side...

Do these bow differences carry on into the modernized Iowas, or was this just "pre-modernization" differences (WWII era) ? My Trumpy Iowa (modern) doesn't have that shape bow, and I already "Un-Jerseyed" the rear anti- skid deck on mine.

During late World War II, the bows of all four Iowas were nearly identical. Sometime before or during the Korean War, the splinter shields on both New Jersey's and Missouri's bows were removed, while Iowa and Wisconsin retained theirs, due to time and budget restrictions. That is why New Jersey has the more streamlined looking bow in that picture. Missouri's bow is nearly identical.

Even after modernization, the bows of Iowa and Wisconsin remain unaltered.

To all of you who wish to build a Trumpeter modernized Iowa, check out the tips and tricks section, I have posted a couple of detail corrections and modifications needed to make the kits more accurate.

Iowa and NJ were born with open bridges.
NJ then had rounded bridge before going to square. Not sure if the same is true for Iowa.

Both Iowa and New Jersey had open bridges upon completion, and during their sea trials. After the sea trials, Iowa joined the fleet retaining the open bridge, while New Jersey had it closed with the rounded structure before joining the fleet.

Iowa retained the open bridge until the end of 1944 when she returned home for an overhaul where the bridge was enclosed with the square structure present like those on Wisconsin and Missouri. Iowa was then nearly identical to the two others except for AA gun placement on turret 2 and various other AA guns and small details.

New Jersey retained the rounded bridge until March 1945, when she returned for an overhaul, where the round bridge was replaced by the square bridge. The mast aft of the second stack was also replaced with a new mast -- the tall one present during the Korean War and modified for Vietnam service. When she rejoined the fleet, the war was virtually over, and after World War II, New Jersey was the oddball amongst the four (a trait she retains to this day, with the different superstructure).

During the Korean War, the other three ships got the new mast. In the Korean War until New Jersey's Vietnam War modernization, all four ships were nerly identical except for the trimmed bows on two ships I mentioned earlier.

From Vietnam onwards, New Jersey would never look like her sisters again, even after the '80s modernization, when the other three got a different structure on top of the tower.

What color is the hull bottom?
Hard to discern the boot topping from the hull red color...or is it green? Definitely there has already been some fresh primer applied.

I'm about to start work on an old New Jersey I've had around for a few years and got to thinking I'd like to do something a little different.

So, leaving aside the economics, manpower and other issues, what would a 21st Century Iowa be armed with.?

I'm thinking of possibly doing the following:

Replace Phalanx CIWS with RAM
Replace existing 5" guns with light weight 5"
Possible replace aft most turret with a VLS system

Plus other changes which would undoubtedly festoon the superstructure with all manner of domes like the carriers.

Am I on the right track?

John i think you`re on the right path..on my iowa conversion i started but never finished i replaced the second turret and the forward abls with vls, the phalanx with ram, the 5 inch turrets with single mounts found on arleigh burkes and i tried to integrate an aegis system and a hangar in the superstructure...

Hi guys,
For those that don't know- Floating drydocks planbook is on CD now- and back in production- I just recieved mine last night- some new pictures- and the pictures that were in the original version are actually viewable! some are even in color- Not sure how the plan pages would print out(if they would be scale or not) but the pics alone are worth the price for me.

Hi all-
I will be going to Hawaii on vacation the last week of March/first week of April. One of my "must see" attractions will be Pearl Harbor of course (both USS AZ memorial and USS Missouri). I will be taking a lot of photos so I was wondering if there was any detail of the Mo that someone wanted photos of that I could post. I will also hopefully be taking photos of the new Arizona model if it is done. Any requests?
