Dear All,

I was in my local angling store yesterday and I picked up a roll or few of a material that I think is going to be absolutely excellent for rigging ships in 1/700 scale.

It's called "Caenis" by Uni-Thread, a small Canadian company. Intended for tying flies on extremely tiny hooks, it is a polyester monofilament of 20 denier gauge. Believe me, it is incredibly fine, thinner than human hair, and comes in black so you don't have to stain it.

Normally, I tease out braided nylon cord to individual fibres, and this stuff is as thin as much of the stuff that I get that way, but is easier to use, coming straight off a reel with no kinks.

By the way, I've sent a roll to Caroline Snyder at WEM, with the suggestion that it might be something that they would want to stock.

This may be a silly question, but if the 20 denier gauge stuff will work for 1/700 scale, would the 40 denier gauge thread be suitable for 1/350 scale? I've never heard of a 'denier' and don't know how the gauge works. If the number is twice as big does that mean that the thread is twice as thick?

It seams he has never bought a pair of nylons for his girlfriend or wife, the higher the number the thicker they are.

Everyone needs to remember to look through medical supply catalogues for unusual materials. 20 Denier suture material is hardly new; I have seen 0.5 Denier (5 micrometer) if you're really daring.

1 Denier = 1 gram / 9Km.

Now I am convinced after looking at David's excellent USS Porter. Does anyone know of any US distributor of this amazing stuff? I've run though several US-based online shops with no luck.

Caenis is made by a Canadian company, so I would be amazed if it were not available in the USA. However, the shop I got it from do mail order, and the website address is on my original post.

Thanks David. I've called several local fly fishing stores and also visited dozens of retailers sites listed on Uni's website. They carry most of regular UNI stuff but no Caenis. In a desperate attempt I tried to buy from the site you mentioned only to find that those Caenis threads are out of stock. There's another website in Poland selling those but they charge an outrageous 99 EU for international shipping.

I guess I'd keep looking for the new holy grail of ship modeling...
