Photo-Etched Handwheels

Hi guys,

I'm after a sheet of photo-etched handwheels - ideally in a variety of sizes and with three, four and more spokes. Suitable for lots of uses at 1:48 scale.

Any ideas?

I got a set awhile back. I think it was Aber or le Arsenal.

Hi Rick,

I do not know about P/E at all, but I do know that the local watchmaker has a vast array of 'cogs' from old watches that covers the whole spectrum in 1/48, my preferred scale. Brass and steel.

A visit to him saved me from having to make an intricate 'pounce wheel'. He had cog(s) that were exactly the right size for a double line of rivets needed for shell plating.

Why not give your local a try? If you explain why you want them they will probably ROFL and you will end up with boxes of spoked handwheels.

If you haven't already found a source of handwheels, try asking ARH about this.
Last year when I was building my 1/72 Flower-class I posted a similar request (actually for PE gunsights)
and he gave me the e-mail address of a UK modeller who produces sets of PE handwheels and other accessories.

They are extremely good value at about �9-10 for a sheet containing well over a hundred wheels in various sizes and types. (many of them are large enough for 1/48 scale) I bought two sheets and have found them invaluable for representing both handwheels and AA gun sights (many of them are about the right size and appearance for 20mm and 40mm sights) on 1/72 and 1/96 models.

I can't remember the name or e-mail address of the supplier, but ARH will probably know!

Even though it's 1:100, you will find a lot of useful handwheels for your purpose. If there are any problems in ordering, just sent me a mail and I will arrange that for you.
