Hi Dave ,

there are such davits too on Zinnia , but I'm looking for the two davits just abaft the wheelhouse , they are of the Welin "type" , the ones that have to be "jacked up" with a handle , they were common on WW1 & later RN destroyers ...

Thanks for the search anyway ! :thumbs_up_1:

Hi Guys ,

thanks to Dave's plan shown above , I was able to build the four davits I need for my two 27ft whalers .

I didn't try Evergreen H profiles nor brass ones , as it seemed impossible to bend to shape ( certainly brass ) , so those davits were done in my usual material : cardboard

the AA battery gives the size ...

Meanwhile was the first whaler painted in & out , the banks were added , I still have to add the upper plank above the gunwale , the ribs will not to be seen anymore
Image

the deck beams of the main superstructure were added , cardboard again , glued with white glue , the beams being impregnated with resin before being cut & glued.

the superstructure on her place :

I'm still building at a slow pace , other updates will come , the weekend of 16 till 18 march , I'll be present at the MODELMA event at Brussels , with this model and my intentions are to speed the building that weekend , in front of the visitors

See you later !

Laurent

Great stuff, really enjoying watching this classic ship take shape. I must say I am surprised to see wooden non-watertight doors on the weather deck though, guess they were made of sterner stuff in those days and did not mind the odd beam sea crashing inboard!

Hi Middle Watch ,

I think the lack of watertight doors on that deck was common on those kind of ships , there is only one watertight door under the forecastle deck , at the same level .

even in a gale , with waves rushing on deck , the only place to be damaged in that case would have been the CO's cabin , not really a stability matter , I think .

By the way , all the other doors ( boiler room , engine room , galley , access to the officer's mess ) on the weather deck are non watertight either .

I built yesterday the two funnels , paper & cardboard again , there is a inner and a outer skin on those funnels , the inner being 14 mm's in diameter , the outer 18 mm's

to slide the outer skin on the inner one , I built spacers ( "T" section )

hereby a drawing :
Image

the front funnel on the rigging plan :
Image

the 2nd funnel abaft the first one :
Image

some pictures of the inner skin , made op paper ( an used envelope ) , wrapped around a wooden stick , coated with resin :
Image
Image

Those inners skins look a little rough , I didn't pay attention to that , as they will be invisible once the outer skin is slided on them .

the funnels with the outer skin on :
Image
Image

with the deflector on it :
Image

all the fittings still have to be fitted on those funnels , but I have to sand them a little , paint them , the inner skin whole in matt black , the inner side of the outer skin in black either & the outer side of the outer skin in grey ( about being understood , ha ! ) :eyebrows: ...

Regards ,

Laurent

Hi Laurent Looking good. I like the way you have made the funnel casing. It's surprising how time consuming it can be putting all the fittings in place around each casing. Look forward to you next up date.

Salut Laurent!

Wow! Absolutely terriffic! Wonderful! Marvellous! Fantastic! I can't find words for your building report. And now I know we have to meet, as the II. Torpedoboat-Flottilla (molstly B-Boats like my B-110) sank the HMS Arabis. So we have to get them both on the same pond sometimes!

If you don't mind, I link this report to our german forum as I admire your technique in building with cardboard. I replace the cardboard with Polyurethane/ABS foil. Equally easy to cut and curve, but resistant to water and very good for glueing and filling.

KEEP UP posting! :thumbs_up_1: You have another fan!

(Can't wait to make pictures from HMS Zinnia and SMS B-110 together!)

Looking very good as usual! The boats in particular.
I wouldn't be keen on using cardboard for such fine details myself, particularly for a model which is going on the water - but you seem to have achieved amazing results with it.

Hi all ,

thanks for the comments ,

if you've missed it , here is the topic about the building of the whalers :
http://www.shipmodels.info/mwphpBB2/vie ... hp?t=16105

at Uli ,

yes , I would be delighted to see this Zinnia topic linked to your German forum , why not ?

I also would be delighted to see our models sailing in formation on a pond , somewhere ...

for the guys living near or in Belgium , there is a modelling event at Brussels this weekend ( 16 to 18 march ) , I'll be there with 3 of my models , at the "Brussels Model Boats" stand .

this event is called MODELMA

Regards ,

Laurent

Sorry, no time to come to Brussels right now. We had a traditional meeting in August in Wuppertal (not so far away from Belgium), but it was cancelled for this year. I will publish the events planned here, when I get the dates.

The link is done and already in discussion:

Please register also and write in our Forum too. Maybe we can help or you can help us.

(By the way, my own building report is in two german forums and here in an english translation)

Hi Uli ,

I did register , I'll try to manage my german language , it's been a very long time , so don't shoot at me if I commit some "sprache verbrechen"

Cheers ,

Hi Guys ,

little update about what I did since the last time ...

first of all , the rudder .

I used cardboard , brass rod ( 1,8 mm diameter ) , stainless steel rod ( 2 mm diameter ) , bits of wood coming from a toothpick , all this was glued with CA glue and covered with G4 resin

in the picture below , you may see the rudder , his shaft tubing and the arm for the servo
Image

Image

Image

As my construction is right to scale but a little fragile , I took the option to have a rudder that could be dismantable to be repaired if needed , but as this rudder is not a "hanging" balanced one ( like à spade ) , once it is put into place , it is very hard to get it off .

I saw once the system you can see below in a german modelling magazine , I thought it was clever and decided to use it on my model

first of all , a first tube is put into the hull ( aluminium 4/5 mm diameter ):
Image

then , the shaft tubing seen above is fitted in , remaining removable :
Image

to put the rudder in , the tubing is removed , the rudder glided in the first tube , the shaft tubing comes then from above , the servo arm being then fitted
Image

Image

Image

the inner tubing is tight fitted in the aluminium tube , so it won't move while the rudder is activated ...

the rudder seen on his place :
Image

Image

Image

At the MODELMA modelling event two weeks ago , I had the occasion to buy chequered plating at scale 1/100 . Well , to be honest , it is slightly out of scale , but I'm the only one to care here , isn't it ??

Image

Image

an application of that chequered plating , around the anchors hawse holes :

Image

Image

Now , at last , I hope Our Admiral will admit I'm cheaper than he is --> I had some problems with gratings .

Doing them in wood at scale 1/100 is a daunting task , some guys can do it , I don't even think to try it :lol_1:

the second option is to buy some parts being photo-etched , it does exist at scale 1/100 , but , as I'm a kind of a stingy scroogy bast*rd , I tried to do them myself , with paper , of course

here some pictures of the results , the pattern has been made on "paint" , really easy to do , just draw white lines on a black underground , print it on a white paper sheet , and copy it on brown "kraft" paper ( the one used to pack stuffs in some shops , or you can borrow one paper bag from your wife , the last time she went to the perfumery shop )

dimensions for our continental guys :
Image

dimensions for our imperial guys :
Image

You remember those "portable decks" I met at the beginning of this report , I'm still not sure if they were gratings or not , and as I'm not sure , I took the decision it were gratings , period :lol_3:

If I ever found I was wrong , no problem , those gratings will be removed ...

hereby some pics of the gratings where they are intended to be :
Image
Image

That's all for today , Folks ! :woo_hoo:

I'm going right now at the basement , do some paint job on the rudder :wave_1:

see you at the next update ...

Laurent

Your rudder-work is marvellous! I like the "fragile" construction and admire your shaft, mine is very simple compared to that and not removable.

Hi Laurent Good rudder construction . I note that you are using a brass tiller? Question what type of linkage { material} do you intend to use from the tiller arm then to the servo? I ask this because it is known that using metal to matal can be a source of interference for the R/C. Just a thought?

Hi Guys ,

thanks for the comments ... :thumbs_up_1:

@ Dave ,

the rudder will be connected to the rudder arm with a twisted stainless steel rod , steel in contact with brass doesn't create interferences , I think ...

Image

on the other side , at the servo , the connection should be the same , I'll just have to pay attention to the distance between the two connections , that both arms are well swung at 90° , once it is set , it is tight and won't move ...

brass to brass or steel to steel is not good , nothing to do with interferences , but "mechanically" speaking ...

I always did it that way & never have encountered any problems , anyway ... :eyebrows:

Cheerzzzz !

Laurent
