Lookig for plans fpr SMS Emden

I did a search of the site to see if this question has come up before, no luck. A friend of mine wishes to build SMS Emden in 1:00. Any guidance on where he could locate good plans would be much appreciated. Thanx, Tony

Thank you for the reply, however the links do not work in that thread, so I am still trying to find out where I can get a good set of Emden plans. I will not deal with Manfred Zinnecker who was mentioned as a source in that other thread, as in previous orders from him the parts were unbelievably poor quality, he sent the wrong parts, and after agreeing to take those incorrect parts back, refuses to answer e-mails or send me the refund. So I am already out over Euro 100 with him and will not send him another dime. Surely there must be a reputable supplier for Emden plans? Thanx, Tony

Would not the German Naval Museum be the best place to go and look at the originals?

These would surely be the sheets every commercial company has copied their information from? The only issue would be scale as I doubt the ships building plans would be drawn in 1:100.

Ordering could be expensive, but from the prices already mentioned it does seem commercial ones are not that cheap anyway?

I'd highly recommend the book SMS Emden 1909-1914, by Peter Gunter Huff. You can buy it from Christian Schmidt, and it also (optionally) comes with plans.

I take it that this book is in English? Tell us more about the text, photos and format. Is it as good as it looks??

I have both the book and the plan set, they are in german language only.
The plan set is excellent and shows every detail, you could build an execellent model with that source.
The book is fantastic too - if you understand at least a little bit of german. It is also excellent illustrated.

I'd also recommend that book, it's comparable with Bruce Taylors "Hood" book. And the drawings are just truly outstanding, a rare feat. Mr Huff also made the most splendid model of SMS Emden. I've been told even the ropes - on the model - were rolled up according the KM guidelines.

As someone who is an avid fan of the early battles of the Great War, the Huff plans are a must have. I collect plan sets of WW1 subjects and these are amongst, if not the very best of them all. They are also the only correct Emden drawings available. I have compared them to many photos, most of which are in the book by the same author and they are without mistakes. It does not matter if the book is in German, as there are many, many photos of Emden in it, which makes it indispensable if you are building a model of that warship.

Speaking of models of the Emden, you can buy a kit in 1/100 scale from Modellbau Zinnecker in Germany. check out their web site;

They have the best, most accurate products in 1/100 scale. I believe they used to have an Emden kit, but if not, you could purchase all the fittings, ship's boats and weapons from them for an Emden project.

As to other ships in von Spee's "Kreuzergeschwader," you can find drawings of Scharnhorst by Lother Wischmeyer, which, like the Emden drawings are the only correct set available. For Nurnberg, a set of really good plans by John Roberts of the UK were done on her sistership Stettin. Stettin had 4 shafts, while Nurnberg only had two like Emden. The hull shape for that class was very similar to Emden, so use this info to make the change to two shafts. I do not have anything on Leipzig, but am looking. She was a modified Bremen class, with less rake to the funnels and similar to Danzig, also in the Bremen class. For Dresden, you could probably use the Emden drawings, and modify her to have 4 shafts, like Stettin.

Modellbau Zinnecker in Germany is the best place to start, so try writing them in short English sentences to make things easier for them to understand. Again their work is simply the best!
