sweeeeeeeeeeet!
Hi Guys,
Dirk,
Your build of USS Barney is most excellent!
Did you use only the kit supplied photo-etch and resin parts?
The WEM 1/350 Knox I'm building has few parts really.
Your model is awesome!

So according to that the main difference between the -39 and -52 was the computer, right? So maybe Barney did have a -52 but the Air guys still called it -39.robbiee19 wrote:Tony,

Follow that link. It give what you need to know on the SPS 39/52.

I know the air guys up in CIC had to update tracks manually, so that just makes it more confusing in my mind. I remember the manual tracks because I went through school with two Aussies who served on the DDG's down there and when they learned we were doing manual track updates they laughed themselves speechless.robbiee19 wrote:Going from analog to digital, but upgrading the computer that allowed for auto tracking air targets.
Dirk, your Model is awsome.
As far as computers, I know there was a UYK20 or two in a space underneath the mid-ships berthing. There was also another computer room in the after part of the forward superstructure, just over the ASROC magazine, but that was an old analog tube-based computer.
I'm going to stop babbling now, as I'm not giving anything relevant to building models.

Thanks Tony and Robbiee for your kind words.
Tony, severals details on my Barney are scratched.
The main mast is soldered from brass rod. The refuling stations
and the OE 82 antennas are made from GMM parts. For building the OE 82, you can see it in front of the bridge, I used german WII cable reels. The WEM kit included only the square version of OE 82, but for Barney I need the round version. Ha..... here is it again.... the same name for OE 82 and different antenna design
Take a look at your Stoddert post, on the last pic you can see the square
OE.
For the bridge windows I used GMM ladders after replacing the old resin ones. The hull of the kit was excellent casted. No bubbles or holes!!!!!!!

Hi Guys,
Dirk,
I have done some research on DDG-9, Towers. Not a lot, just some.
If I were to build her from a future ISW 1/350 DDG-6 kit, I'd have to build her as she was in 1968.
During the only VietNam tour for the US New Jersey, USS Towers operated with New Jersey for quite some time, "on the gun line". Once again, "Ridin' shotgun for a Battleship".
I have some pics..oh they're in Stillwell's New Jersey book. We'll see.
Whatever Adams ship/configuration you chose will look awesome I'm sure.
If you plan to build DDG-9 SINKEX, will she be sinking?
Just wondering.
On Sunday, I bought some shop tools to continue on with me 1/96 DDG project at home, so that I'm not quite so reliant on, "going to Dave's house", on the other side of town to get any, "Large scale modeling", done. I would still want to go to Daves for the modeling fellowship and modeling shop use though.
One of these days, I'll post a pic of the 1/96 Late config DDG-24 s/s profile that I'm using for my 1/96 DDG-22 project.

I do not know, if this has been made public in this thread, already:
WEM is re-issuing the 1/350 Stoddert and the Ltjens kit, which had been sold out for the better part of the last 2 years. Even in November last year the re-issue was vehemently denied by the good folks from WEM.
I had an e-mail exchange with Dave Carter: he say that the kits will ready for shipment within 4-6 weeks. Get your's while you can!
I thought I'd let you know!

I'd love to see the SINKEX diorama. I have a Skywave DDG kit that I stuck together quickly and unfortunately didn't pay attention to the seams (first plastic kit after years of building resin). I thought that SINKEX photo would be a good diorama possibility for the kit.

Hi guys,
I build the Towers in small scale, its Dragons Cochrane kit. I bought her on Ebay for only 3 Euros. It includes everything to build the US ships (MK 11 and MK 13 launchers). Also you can build the ships of the Greek and German Navy. Like I told, WEMs Kit is absolut great but for a sinkex much to expensive. Three years ago I payed 200 Euro for the kit. On yesterday I saw off most off the bow and sand it flush. Puh.. it looks terrible
But why not to build her during sinking. I never build a heavy weathered and rusty ship. By the way I want to test new technics in painting with acrylics and chalk.
Tony, I cant wait to see more of your DDG pictures.
Cheers

yep...per! I got one!
Hi Guys,
3 weeks ago I was on SteelNavy's message board, and I saw a message entitled, "resin ship for sale", or something like that.
I opened and read the message. It said, "WEM 1/350 Adams DDG", so I promptly replied, by saying, "I'll take it". After a number of e-mails, some negotiating...it's in my posession now.
Here is what I got:

This model is better than I'd hoped!
Just had to share!
Tony
ps and just now the kits have become available again!

start her up again....
Hi Guys,
Thanks for Francisco's dedication to ship modeler's as a whole and his complete unselfishness! I now have all the pics I could ever want of both the SPS-40 and SPS-52 radars.
Take a look..........
SPS-52......

The SPS-40 pics I have are close-ups and mostly for designing a p/e copy.
I will try to post some later.........
Now.......here we go again..........
Is this how the SPS-39 looks.......if I knew no different?
My 1/96 DDG project wil be as Benjamin Stoddert was configured in 1972.
SPS-39 right?
I now know I wil be making this SPS-52 from other than p/e.
Such a relief!
Thanks again to Francisco.

The Great Sagami Bay Gunshoot.
You would need a Japan Maritime Safety Agency (Coast Guard) ship in such a diorama; not sure which one was involved.Tony Bunch wrote:Hi Guys,

Can you elaborate?
Ship Dios, (in every sense), are not often seen.
If done correctly, they are awesome!

Tony,
Glad the kit came through for you. It looks to be still "factory" wrapped. Nice score. My copy has a little odd texture on the hull sides, but otherwise it's easily the nicest resin ship kit I've ever seen.

Hi Guys,
GoneAsiatic,
I just read the entire ships history.....according to this website/writer/...
http://www.hazegray.org/danfs/destroy/ddg9.htm?
...and I saw no mention of this event. You've peaked my curiosity. Are you sure it was DDG-9? Was this a lesser significant event?
Can you describe further?
Devin,
Yep, it is a very fine model indeed. Surprisingly, the 01 vertrep platform side extensions are in place, (not on the last config of DDG-22 as the kit and instructions would indicate), which makes doing the DDG-22 from earlier in her service career that much easier.

The HazeGray info ends in 1979; the Great Sagami Bay Gunshoot occured in the mid-1980`s.
Something like that probably wouldn`t be in DANFS.
