Am considering modeling my Tamiya E class destroyer as HMS Echo or Eclipse (thanks for posting those photos, Laurence, that was an inspired choice!), and was wondering how to model the extended bridge wings for either one. According to my interpretation of the photos, Echo was fitted with rectangular extended bridge wings which are flush with the bridge face, whereas Echo had angular bridge wings--kind of a U with straight, angular sides, that started a bit aft of the face of the bridge. But it looks like the aft part of the bridge wings on each are the original narrow bridge wings, leading to the flag platform.
Comments?
And does anyone have any photos of the compass platform arrangement for this or similar classes? It would be nice to add a few details to the Tamiya kit's compass platform.
Now a question about the WA scheme worn by Eclipse in the photo Laurence posted. Is that a two (White and Blue) or three tone (White, Blue, and Green) scheme?
And what is the shape of the Blue (?) panel on the hull. Fore, it angles up form the waterline. But is there any discernable pattern aft?
This scheme reminds me of the WA scheme worn by HMS Eskimo (and a couple of other Tribals) during the war. In that sheme, the blue panel angled back to the waterline in the aft portion of the hull. But I don't see that happening here. Anyone have any photos that shed any light on this?
After studying the photo of Eclipse a bit, it seems to me possible to discern what looks like a blue, sawtooth-like pattern on the hull side from the end of the foc'l deck aft.
Cover your eyes, peek out through a narrow slit between your forefinger and middle finger, hyperventilate, and bear down real hard, and you'll see what I mean.
I don't have specific compass platform photos for the E-class, but I will likely have them for other A-I's.
When I have some spare time at the weekend I'll have a look see.
In terms of camouflage do you have Alan Raven's 4 volumes?
Vol.2 p5 shows Echo in 1942 with a nice 3 colour disruptive scheme of MS1, B5 & 507c.
Vol.4 p46 also has one of the overpainted photos the same as I posted above.
In terms of your questions, I'm no camouflage buff, but it does appear to be a western approaches type scheme.
Probably with light blue in it, but its hard to tell if there's 3 colours there as she's so dirty and weathered.
In terms of the bridge wings I do believe they were reshaped when the ships got oerlikons, I might have some close up photos somewhere.
However they will be A-I and won't be E-class which seems a poorly photographed class in general.

Information & Tabular Record of Movement (TROM) For HMS Eclipse H08
Background Information
Eclipse was an "E" Class Fleet Destroyer ordered on 1st November 1932 from Denny at Dumbarton under the 1931 Build Programme.
The ship was laid down on 22nd March 1932 and launched on 12th April 1934 as the tenth RN ship to carry the name introduced in 1715.
It was last used for a Trawler during WWl. Build was completed on 29th November 1934 for a cost of 246,664, excluding items supplied by the Admiralty such as guns and communications equipment.
Much of her service was in the Mediterranean until 1936 because of the Abyssinian crisis. In April 1936 after some months refitting she joined the Home Fleet with the 5th Destroyer Flotilla and for some months was deployed again in the Mediterranean. This destroyer was held in Reserve in 1938 and re-commissioned in August 1939 manned by Reservists for the Royal Review of the Reserve Fleet at Weymouth.
She remained in commission and after a successful WARSHIP WEEK National Savings campaign in March 1942 was adopted by the civil community of Ell and, then in the West Riding of Yorkshire.

I`ve searched everywhere to find a wartime photo of HMS Electra, and I`ve found one one following website http://www.wartimememories.co.uk, have a look.
It seems that many of the wartime E and F class destroyers were fitted with DF offices (basically a small square structure, perhaps big enough to accomodate a couple of sailors) between the flag platform and the fore stack. It can be seen in the photos of HMS Echo that Laurence kindly posted to this site. Does anyone have a good closeup photo that more clearly shows what these DF offices looked like?
HMS Electra probably 1941 about to fire a line to another ship off her stb. bow
Another observation I draw your attention to is her bridge wings look enlarged to me.
I'm convinced this photo is after her London refit.
To me her bridge wings are ''fitted for but not with oerlikons".

HMS Electra pre-war
HMS Electra on her builders trails
HMS Electra pre-war likely in and around Portsmouth, note funnel bands have changed.
HMS Electra pre-war
I have one more rare pre-war photo of Electra which I cannot post due to restrictions.
Its damn hard to find decent wartime photos of her unfortunately, though the top 1 is a gem!
Next time I'm at the IWM I'll have a look for more wartime of her.

Many thanks Laurence a much clearer photo than the one I saw.she seems to still have her 0.5" MG`s,and wearing the Peter Scott camo scheme she received in june 41.I think this photo was taken on her way to Singapore with Force Z.Have you read "Hms Electra" by lt cmdr cain &A V Sellwood?
Excellent wartime photo of Electra Laurence. Too bad that this is the only shot of her that I know of. I wish more wartime photos existed of her especially at the time of the Java Sea Campaign. What are the colors of the 1941 photo, 507c, and either a blue or green??
Re Electra 1941 photo, colours likely RN white and WA blue and WA green.
Re Eclipse 1941/1942 photo, colours likely just RN white and WA blue.
Great pictures Laurence. IWM has the photo of Eclipse 1941/42 camo showing her starboard side. This picture is published on pages 104/105 of Gregory Haines' "Destroyers at War".
Excuse the delay chaps floods round here knocked out my broadband for 3 days!
I have the book in H/B (its on my destroyer reference list on these very boards in the book section!)
I read it sometime in the late 1990s so I'm a little rusty!
Gregory Haines book I'm certain I have somewhere, it has a painting of a destroyer on the front, think its depicted looking at it from port quarter???
Sorry to report chaps over the weekend I searched high and low for good photos of A-I bridges and came up with nothing.
I'll keep looking!

Due to demand people have been asking me for a one of the minelayers next rather than continuing to do this alpabetically.
HMS Express it is then!
HMS Express.
After she had her bows repaired, there are oerlikons on the bridge wings and she appears very much a different looking destroyer when compared to the 1940 photo below.

The photo of Express in camouflage is probably (but not certain) taken after return to home waters in 1942.
Doubtful that 20mm fitted before going East in 1941.
Check refit dates AND armament returns for 1941 and 42.
Sometimes I'm in a more difficult situation than others.
I don't live in or near to London or Priddy's Hard!
I am also not researching for a technical book, but rather an operational one.
With the 20mm comment I assume you mean Electra?
I will go and delve into my Electra book and find when Cain says they were fitted.
What ports could Oerlikons have be fitted in?
After London and before Java she called into the following ports I have so far been able to ascertain in this order: Sheerness, Scapa, Archangel, Scapa, Rosyth, Scapa, Greenock, Freetown and Capetown, Singapore, Tangjong Prick and Sourabaya.
Furthermore the bofors question which was raised with Electra, have you ever been able to find out where PoW had hers fitted?
Of course Electra escorted her to the Far East is it too much to suggest they both had the army bofors fitted in the same port?
