What do you guys think the chances are that Forrestal, Ranger and Saratoga will be saved? I think that at least one of the above.
It's too bad there are no 1/350 (0r good 1/700) kits of any of these vessels. I know I would buy one if there was. Trumpy to the rescue? At least in 1/700?
Anybody here serve on a Forrestal or Kitty hawk class?

USS FORRESTAL
Avery,
Although there is an organization trying to save the Forrestal if is very doubtful because,
1. It has been put on the list for disposal
2. When she was halfway thru her overhaul the funds were cut and she was placed in mothballs - so she is a very incomplete ship and would have to be put back together first.
No idea on the other ships.

Re: USS FORRESTAL
At one point, the Forrestal website said the Mayor of Baltimore promised pier space for the Forrestal? IIRC, it would have been along 95 and tower over the highway (if it ever happened). The main page says the Governor of MD is looking for a home near Ft McHenry. However, the "what's new" page hasn't been updated in almost six years, however!Doneganart wrote:Avery,

There is a group in Rhode Island trying to save the Saratoga. They want to moor her at the carrier pier at the old Quonset Pt naval base near Newport.
There is also a group trying to bring the Ranger to Portland or Vancouver (WA).

Avery,
I served on the KITTY HAWK from 1969 to 1971 during Vietnam.
SCOTTORAM
I went aboard the Connie a few years ago and it was like being at home on the Hawk - I was able to find my way around without any problem.
But I always said those two ships should NEVER be in the same port at the same time - still have bad memories of Bremerton. Ok so we were all proud of our own ship

Revell Forrestal project.
So I have started work on Revell's 1/5xx Forrestal-class carrier model. I have chosen to model Forrestal CV-59 as she appeared in 1975. I have started work on the hull and figured I'd get this thread moving again. Here are some pics (please feel free to offer any observations or criticisms - I am not easily hurt):
Here is an overview of the starboard side from the bow

This is elevator two on the port side. I have scratchbuilt a replacement catwalk area which is visible in white plastic at the bottom left

Closeup of elevator one with the sponsons in place.

Fantail area. I have to replace the posts in the oval-shaped area on the rear quarter.

Please bear in mind that this is a hobby for me and not a way of life. I cannot possibly rival folks like Kelly Quirk or other master carrier builders. Hope you like what you see - I will post more when I make more progress.

Here is a link to a very good collection of photographs from USS Kitty Hawk's recent visit to Sydney.

While the USS Kitty Hawk was still steaming along the Australian East Coast en route to Sydney, Rodger Kelly was fortunate enough to be able to hitch a ride on a COD from Sydney Kingsford-Smith airport to the deck of CV 63.
Following his carrier trap, Rodger had the opportunity to see Kitty Hawk's Air Wing in action.
