One day I'll have to save up and get the new Artesania Latina HMS Surprise... it looks excellent. Whether or not I'll ever get around to building it though...

I did. They have a good photo collection of the model but when I added up the cost of prints of their collection it actually became cheaper to fly there from Boston, MA with my digital camera, and fly back on the redeye. They were enormously helpful but I just couldn't justify the expense when the baby food bills keep adding up!Joseph Reindler wrote:have you tried the NMM Greenwich for plans?

It just seems to happen every time I go yachting. I have an absolute splitting headache today, a long trail of receipts from strange places and absolutely no recollection of where I went. Auckland must be running out of the stuff after last night's efforts!

Re: Airfix HMS Victory plans help...
I'm sure I have the Victory instructions somewhere (built the kit last year), I'll scan them in for you if you want (might take a few days though before I can get round to it)johnny canuck wrote:Does anyone have a copy of the plans for the Airfix 1/180 Victory kit. Victory instructions
Thank you very much.
Let me know when they are ready and I will give you my e-mail address.
I am going to try to build this for my father for Christmas. Hopefully I have given myself enough time. (I build rather slowly)
Thanks again,
James

H.M.S Victory
My progress so far...in this build i chose to back date her as launched with many, many modifications already performed, and a ton left still, but overall very happy with the results thus far.

I also have questions:
1) Do you use any wooden parts to replace plastic ones and
2) How did you manage to achieve that wonderful wooden look for hull and deck (I am collecting tips on wooden look and would especially appreciate yours).
Good luck with your Victory and looking forward to see your further progress and pics.

I'm working off a set of plans i purchased from the NMM in london, plan #ZAZ0120... lines and decorations that cost about $105.00, and misc photos of like models. Also from this fantastic site http://www.hms-victory-build.co.uk/ where you may follow my build from the beginning along with others in various stages. The guys there are very knowledgeable, and very helpful.
All of the mods have been done with evergreen styrene to this point. As for the wood effect, that 's difficult to explain mainly because i struggled with it myself, but i'll try. I sprayed an enamel base using testors light ivory just to seal it, once dry i scuffed it using a scotchbrite pad.
The paints i used for the wood look are Tamiyas acrylic desert yellow, white.red brown, black, and artist acrylic raw sienna. I applied a thinned down mixture of desert yellow first...slightly transparent, and let cure. Using the tamiya acrylics the next phase really just consisted of thin washes using, and mixing the colors to desired tints, and wiping away with my fingers leaving uneven streaks, along with dry brushing, and alternating the techniques, and let dry. Next i applied the artist acrylic raw sienna very lightly in random spots, and gently wiping away, again leaving only a thin film. Next i dry brushed with black to high light the grain a little more, and when cured i sealed the whole mess in dulcote.
During each phase it's a good idea to check your work in natural sunlight, to give you an idea of the true coloring. Anyways thats it...i'm far from being an expert, and hope this helps a little,
Michael

Michael,
Thank you for very detailed explanation of your wood effect recipe. I understand that it was difficult to explain - but I see no problem to understand. I hope that if I follow your method accurately step by step I will reach needed result. I will try it on some spare plastic.
Thank you very much for taking time to explain.
