Thanks for reminding me DBC but I rebuilt the hull and everything since I'm not pleased with it's results and I didn't use soctch tape this time, I'm now using CA glue and no more tape and your right DBC it really leaves a line which I experienced in the Belknap.

And to answer your question about who taught me to scratchbuild... almost... NO ONE!!. I'm just inspired by those scratchbuilding modelers like Bill, ARH, DAVE and more. So I started it step by step and my first step in scratchbuilding is through paper first

It is the hatch for the VDS (Variable Depth Sonar, I think), which is towed at times to get the receiver below layers of cold / hot water, and have a better contact.

I made the MACK after the hull using John's (kidcurrie42) template for the MACK and some plastic rod and photo-etching

The photo of ex-USS Fanning at her change of ownership shows the doors in the transom typical of the SQR-18 towed array sonar. SQR-18 is or was passive only. Its wet end was a long, thin, flexible tube containing hydrophones that collectively detected long-wavelength (thus low-frequency) acoustic patterns.

The larger plate sealed the original larger port for the SQS-35 variable-depth sonar. SQS-35 was active only. Its wet end was a large, heavy, fish-shaped transducer.

The photo of Asturias (F74) shows the same port, evidently for the SQR-18. That is interesting because Combat Fleets of the World does not list SQR-18 among her sensors. Combat Fleets of the World says that her SQS-35A was "updated" but from the photo I'd say that the SQS-35 was removed.

The photo of F74 also shows that the Mk 25 torpedo tubes have been deleted or were never installed. The design provided for 2 Mk 25 TT to fire through ports in the transom, to one side of the VDS compartment. I thought it was the port side.

Strictly speaking the Spanish ships have Mk 22 launchers (16 rounds), not Mk 13 (40 rounds).

As far as I know, the ASW sensor inside the transom hatch was the SQS 35, not for the SQR 18. You are right on the torpedo tubes, however. They were removed to gain space for quarters.

Hi Guys,
Here is, "halfway exciting", and I hope you guys like!
After masking for one hour and painting for 10 minutes, here's what the non-skid areas of the fantail look like.
The cruisebook from Brewton WestPac 1976-77 did have some images showing most of the fantail area and this is what I copied onto the WEM 1/350 FF model. I did notice the model is missing three closed chocks on the fantail alone. I believe I might have this solved.......soon!



I'll be taking small bites out of finishing the non-skid areas of the decks, as there is still more to do. And, "that's the way the cookie crumbles"!
After the non-skid areas are all finished, I'll paint the rest of the haze grey. After that, I'll decal the deck areas that need decaling. That's going far enough ahead for now!

Best laid plans............can still have pitfalls!
After having such good fortune with the non-skid application on the stern, I had some paint peel off in other areas. Talk about frustration! I primered the entire model before painting, just to keep this from happening..........see pic....

In the midships area, I had more peel off when going to phase 2 of the non-skid application. I thought I was on a roll! I already have to re-paint some of the deck, so I changed my mind and decided to paint all of the haze grey areas instead. I'll get back to the deck area non-skid soon enough.
I reasoned that if I will have any more peel off coming my way, then the last color applied should be the non-skid instead of the haze grey. I paint the deck areas first, as they are usually easier to mask over before painting the vertcal surfaces. Logically, the next stage would be to paint the non-skid areas, (still the deck), and then paint the haze grey last.
The entire hull exterior is now haze grey. I will be finishing up the haze grey areas above the main deck next. Then, I'll get back to finishing the non-skid.
Here is some of the Brewton in her exterior haze grey color.......before a little weathering.......not there yet!

It's Labor Day, and I'll be going to work shortly!
