I have a question about differences between Takao and Atago in 1944. Were they two identical-looking ships in that period ?

Generally I would like to know if drawings from AOTS (Takao in 1944) can be used also for Atago. I read that both ships were receiving the same modifications during WW2. So I think Atago and Takao should be similar (except AA fit) in that period, but I don't know it for sure.

There are only subtle differences between the two - different auxiliary pipe arrangements on either side of #1 funnel, different porthole arrangements on the face of the lower bridge, very subtle differences in the shhape of the raised forecastle coming that supports/extends from the chrysenthenum shield at the bow. Probably some differences in single 25mm arrangements.

One thing I'd heard of but never investigated is that Atago may have filled in the side opening ahead of the catapult support to be solid like the rebuilt Maya.

Not bad!, I think is cool reading what others have to say in their own languages, of course as long as you understand what they are saying. I didn�t understand a couple of words, my Cuban Spanish is not the same as the 1 from Spain, however I think he did a pretty good job.

I got my 1/350 Takao last week. I'm a bit cheesed though. The port hull half is a short shot. The plastic stops just after the aft anchor.

Definitely contact your source for replacement.

On the resin turrets; Gernot's photo of the Lionroar set shows a horizontal seam line. There was such a seam line for the plating but, it again looks way overscale. We'll have to wai for the set's release to be sure.

Sanding down the plastic turret siding may be the only way to go on this. A pain, though.

I have almost no knowledge of the IJN, but bought this on an impulse.

The only "problem" I have is that with the instructions in Japanese, I am unable to figure out any painting instructions. I gather the overall ship is in a dark gray and that (portions of) the decks are a reddish linoleum ?? True/false & if true what might be a good linoleum color? Is there agood source for detail color info, other than looking at the boxart ?

The basic answer is yes on both points, grey hull, reddish-brown (almost chocolate brown) linoleum decks.

As to shades, its easiest to answer if you tell us which paints you prefer to use.

Best color match chart is the IJN chip chart issued by S&S.

Thanks. I should have done my homework 1st. After posting I went over to WEM (I've used WEM for what little ship painting I've done, US & RN) and found their IJN paint set. I also found the S&S chip set.

So I see WEM has an IJN linoleum and I also found a rattle can of Tamiya TS-69 Linoleum Deck Brown down in my pile of paints so that problem is solved one way or t'other ...

However, both WEM & S&S mention that paint varied by naval yard, so what would I use (Sasibo, Kure, Maizuru, or Yokosuka) for the 1942 Takao ? I saw a set of Skywave instructions & they just said IJN Gray ...

According the TROM at Combinedfleet.com , she left Kure on May 22, 1942, so persumably she got repainted there in Kure Grey:

22 May 1942:
Departs Kure for Ominato with MAYA in Vice Admiral Hosogaya Boshiro's (former CO of MUTSU) Fifth Fleet, Second Strike Force under Rear Admiral (later Vice Admiral) Kakuta Kakuji (former CO of NAGATO) with the carriers JUNYO, RYUJO, DesDiv 3's SHIOKAZE, DesDiv 6's IKAZUCHI, DesDiv 7's AKEBONO, SAZANAMI and USHIO.

Whoops,

I got Skulski's Anatomy of the Ship and Yokosuka was the construction yard and also the refit yard in 1942, so it'll be Yokosuka IJN Gray ...

Yeah, Yokosaka was also listed as one of the places she frequented, but she received her new secondary weapons at Kure, I think, and I think that's what the kit represents; not sure though.

Does anyone know what Parts #7, #10, and #11 are for on the 1/350 Takao photoetch sheet from Aoshima? They are not listed in the instructions. Maybe they are for the aircraft?

BTW- The kit is coming along fine. I have most of the subassemblies put together and now it's mainly painting, photoetch, and rigging. It's been a pleasure so far!
