They are the Spanish Baleares class, but they were virtually identical to the US Knox class.



The chain from the capstan was normally attached to the keel anchor, not to the one on deck.

That was the nicest way I've ever been told I was wrong.
Yes, the Beleares look identical when you look up close.
I chose to route the anchor chain this way, not as the numerous pictures show. I am not going to add on the additional chain detail....not now anyway. Here is a blasphemy!
I have to move on with this project, as it is a commission job and I want to be paid before Christmas; a true modeler's quandry! Why would I spend so much time adding detail when the recipieint most likely will not be truly able to appreciate it? I did it for myself, the Knox Fans and any other modelers; that's why!
Here is the captains gig, and a tripod that I am not clear of its purpose. Take away the commercial radar seen on about half of these tripods and what do you have? Don't know.

No way, no intention to offend or critizise you. I was simply giving you some extra info that I thought you were lacking. These pics are in no way normal pics, but modeller�s ones. They come from a huge collection that a friend and I took last march, gathering graphic stuff for my future F73 Catalu�a project.

I am beginning to become quite fond of Knox class ships myself!

The hull is made from Fiberglass and the parts are cast resin. The hull is 54 3/4" loa and the beam is 5 7/8". Hull price is $189.00 and the price for the set is $448.00, this does not include the structure, but does include the stack/mack. The builder has to build his or her own structure and deck from what ever materials that they whish to use. I my self use Styrene and Sentra for my strustures. The set includes the HUll, Stack and all of the cast fittings which would be gun, launchers and w/t doors, bitts, chocks, hatches, encapsulated life rafts and many other fittings.

Hi Guys,
Long time, no post!
First off, I ordered my SSY 1/96 Knox FF hull and plans. I also got the pre-formed MACK as a separate piece. The MACK will need some weight reducing, but beats the heck out of making one from scratch. I'll have plenty of that to do anyway!

On to 1/350 USS Brewton........nearing completion.........




I'll post some more pics as I get towards mounting the model, rigging and weathering.
Won't be long now!

Hi Guys,
Just a quick update regarding smaller details on Brewton.
There were 6 35' whip antenna's in 1976. I detected that 3 were a red/white, "barber pole", color combination. The 35' whip antenna will be 1.2" in overall length.
Here is how I painted the 3 antennae:
1) After painting .012" wire, (actually too large in dia), flat white, I configured a painting jig for the red stripes to be applied. After determining the number of stripes per antenna, I made the jig with .125" spacing.

Hi Guys,
I've taken a few vacation days to get this project behind me. I'm almost there! I'll miss this thing.........a little! Kind of reminds me of a 1/48 F-105 I built for my brother...in flight; loaded with bombs! It was a fun project, and looked pretty good when finished. Never to be seen on a contest table.
I've also taken many pictures of this build to share with you folks.
I guess I love the feedback, cuz I've noone better to share with than the Knox fans.
Plus, I now too am a Knox fan!
Why on earth would I buy a 1/96 hull and plans???????????


Some more progress pics to share...
Here is the helo pad with the safety netting in place. On the real ship, the netting is rope and the framework is steel tubing.
I painted the netting a tan-ish color, and then carefully painted the framework neutral grey, (hull color).


Here is the briodge roof tripod. Simple scratchbuild with a p/e ladder attached. I used as many pics as I could to make this part, and I took the dimensions from the kit provided p/e piece, (sadly too two-dimensional), so it looks accurate........to me.



When in doubt, scratch build a replacement!

Basically, I pulled a pre-painted piece of wire, (to be used for the whip antennae), through a small diameter brass tube at .125" a time exposing .125", (or whatever amount" you might need), through a break in the tube. By cutting the brass tube and separating the tube segments a pre-measured amount, I now have a painting jig. I made tick marks on the outside of the wire, so I knew precisely how much to feed the wire into the tube. Does this better explain?

At the beginning of this project, I had no idea how much time I'd be spending adding on detail. Orginally, this was supposed to be "quick and easy"; now that's a laugh!
I special ordered BMK brass 1/350 5"54 barrels for a number of my, (and a friends'), 1/350 Cold War ship models. Next, I could not resist using one on this project! Many thanks to Burkhardt Masch of BMK for the perfect service!

Great results there Tony. I know how the "quick build" story goes, you're not alone!

Well, at least the quality of your work is undoubtful, maybe in the future this model will be worth a LOT (argh, at least you can dream about that eh)

Maybe you can build the 1/96 as a Baleares class. I've visited one a few years ago in Belgium! Looked cool with those Merokas and the SM-1 Launcher!

Hi Guys,
I spent all day today doing the ship's helo.
I used the WEM, "NAVY" decals, as I could not find any better ones elsewhere in white. I have a decal sheet for an entire 1976 Enterprise airwing, but no white, "NAVY's". I did use the stars and bars from the carrier decal sheet, as they were better. Sorry WEM, but there is room for improvement in this area. Actually, the hull numbers are from an ISW Coontz kit..better decals!
I studied some SH-2's on the i-net, and the paint scheme went to low vis not too long after 1977. I am only concerned for this project though, and I painted the a/c overall FS36081 Euro I-grey. The main rotor is lt grey on top and black on the bottom. I painted the windows black, and the landing gear white. The tail rotor was a challenge, as it was a three part painting process:
1) paint overall black
2) mask the rest of tail rotor and paint the tips red
3) mask all but the area of the tail rotor for the white bands splitting the red rotor tips.

I did not have decals for any specific a/c squadron markings, but the 1976-77 WestPac cruisebook showed SH-2 from HSL-37 detachment.

The depth of field is greater restricted, but I got some close ups yet achieved....still fooling around with it. The attachment bugeye lens cost $30.
