Displaying Nagato waterlined HELP NEEDED

I will soon be starting Hase's 350 Nagato. I would like to display her in a diorama of some sort requiring a waterlined look. I have had varied success chopping plastic hulls and this one in particular doesn't leave much up top. I have decided to build a box base and add a seascape up to the required level so i dont need to butcher the hull. What i need to know is whats the best way to fill the box up. I assume some sort of resin is needed (ship will be at anchor so sulpting shouldn't really be needed although i may have some ships boats moving about). Any ideas/help welcome.

Check out the method in hte post below using sculpted foam, Liquitex gel and then paint I expect.
