Though I have not worked on any models in the past few years, I've always wanted to do a full hull Arizona, detailing the shafting and hull appurtanences, including the major underwater openings, such as main scoop injection and overboards, and torpedo tube mouths if I go with an early version. It's something that you rarely see.

Keith Bender adds all this stuff, along with hull plating, to his models. Really does add something to the finished model.

Well, for a year now I've been wanting to build a ship model and have lurked this site. Among other reason to not get started one of them is the painting of the ship that has held me back. I just don't want to PE up and detail a model and mess up the paint. I feel that painting makes or breaks a model (I do tanks and aircraft models)

So, to solve this dilemma and get over the hump, I've decided to do the MiniHobbyModels 1/700 Arizona, that someone gave to me, right out of the box. The idea is to build it to practice painting, learning what sub-assemblies to make before painting etc. This is a practice model.

What I would like to do is pain it in the scheme just before the one it was in at Pearl on 7 Dec. I've read all through this thread and looked at some other sites. I believe it should be in overall Navy Gray, teak deck for the wooden portions and deck blue for the steel portions. Also, the turret tops should be flat red? Is this correct? If so, what are the best paints from the usual manufacturers to use for these colors?

Also, is there anything I need to add or change that major for this kit for the period I want to do (I guess about 1939-40)

I want to get this started this week.

I agree that every BB at pearl was ms-1 overall dark (navy gray) but the model at pearl and most paintings show blue. I would do the navy gray. Those films and pictures from pearl where SO dark I dont see how they could be blue. (edit) OK I defer to others superior photo analytical skill)

To put it as politely as possible, horse manure. What you found is a colorized image from the A. Huddleston collection. Mr. Huddleston colorized quite a few photos of the PH attack, this is just one of many. The telltales are all there *if* you know how to look.

I believe that may be open to debate as well. IIRC, a recap of colors was posted briefly on 12/7/06 which stated that the WeeVee and California may have been experimenting with colors other than 5D. Also, there is some speculation OK may have been repainted into 5S after her collision repairs. I only wish I had saved that info before it was taken down.

Question about the 1/700 Dragon AZ...is the height of the part that makes up the boat deck too shallow? I bought some Loose Cannon 5inch/51cal guns to replace the "turrets" in the kit (they are nice, BTW), and while fiddling around with them discovered they are too tall to fit into the openings on the AZ kit. I'm thinking that Loose Cannon got it right and Dragon probably got it wrong, as the Loose Cannon weapons are from their recent circa-1942 Colorado kit.

Hi Tracy and all BB-39 fans,

During my visit to the UK IPMS Scale Model World contest last November, I managed to pick up the Revell 1/426 Arizona for �5.00 (pretty good value I thought). This is only my second warship kit, and the largest to date. I had to wait until Christmas to get my hands on it, as it was a present from my wife. Anyhow, as the box was badly crushed, I checked all of the parts out tonight. There is a little damage to one of the hull half bow railings (piece of railing broken off), but I shall probably be removing these anyway. Thankfully, all of the kit parts are present, apart from the display stands (parts 4). Does anyone have any spare stands that I can use please? (or should I consider another way of supporting the model off the surface once completed?).

I saw this model "live" at the IPMS Region II convention about a year and a half ago. The pictures really don't do the model justice - it's fabulous. Now, "we" just have to hope Charles is too busy to finish his Lex conversion for this years nationals!!

Thanks for the great shot of your winches. I've been contemplating how to scratchbuild mine for awhile now. I was thinking of using the base of some 20mm's from my Trumpy Lex kit for the drum heads, but will give your Dremel trick a try.

I'm done with the build of my Dragon 1/700 Arizona. I need to add rigging (this will be my first rigged ship ever) which scares the snot out of me. I understand fly tieing wire or stretched sprue are my best choices.

The question is this. I brought the build to our club meeting earlier this week. I was promptly told that I should have left the OS2U aircraft at home or they should have been yellow winged. I am trying to display her in Summer of '41 fit as that avoids the blue vs. grey discussion, but left the turret tops red.

Should I re-color the OS2U yellow winged? They are currently dark blue and white as the instructions and Tom's MW instructions both recommended.

I'm not sure what you mean by "summer", but this pic on Navsource dated 9-6-41 shows an Arizona Kingfisher and it is definitely not yellow:

What color did you paint the ship? Dark Gray or Standard Grey? In the summer of '41, the plane may have been overall Non Specular Light Gray, but it was most likely NOT silver/silver dope with yellow wings.
