It's interesting to note that the �gis computer logic will not allow a second attack against an individual target until after the kill assessment subroutine runs. They are very confident that what they sent against the particular target (missile, gun or CIWS) ought to have killed the target, and an additional salvo is a waste. Therefore, the system will confirm target destruction before ordering a second mission.
With a several hundred mile range and a 10,000Km/h missile, they get a few chances.

1. The AWG-9 radar on the F-14A and the Phoenix AIM-54C were certainly over-hyped. By 1985, the limitations were very apparent. The APG-71 for the F-14D was far better.
2. Aegis has had fairly extensive software and computer upgrades since it first came into service. The new system (PAAMS) will likely have many of the same teething problems as Aegis did. The PAAMS system should prove to be as effective as Aegis in a few years after the bugs get worked out. Aegis has been around for a quarter of a century.
3. The standard missile needs target illumination in the final few seconds of the interception, only. The autopilot is programmed before launch and uploads course corrections when needed. Currently the USN has three variants of the SM-2MR in service: Block III, Block IIIA, and Block IIIB. The Block III and IIIA missiles are being upgraded to the Block IIIB specification. The Block IIIB unlike other blocks incroporates a terminal infrared homming option, as well as the illumination. The Evolved Sea Sparrow will most likely have a IR option in a few years. The Standard missile six is slated to have active homing incorporated for the system currently in the AIM-120D missile.
4. The Navy has already begun (a long time ago) developing Aegis' sucessor. The system started out as two phased array radars: SPY-2 and SPY-3. SPY-2 is a long range 3D air search radar. The SPY-3 is a 3D tracking and illumination radar. The two radars work in seperate bands and do not conflict. SPY-2 and SPY-3 have been merged into a single system which is called SPY-3. The system is far more powerful than Aegis. The new system does not rely upon the SPG-62 for illumination.
