Sorry guys, I've been sick all day and away from my pc.

Anyone know why none of the operational Kashtan's seem to have any missiles?

Either lack of availability, or they're only fitted into place when out on the water? Just hazarding a guess. Probably something on the latter case.

They only carry them at sea, there are pictures of that. In port they remain in the magazines.
Indeed they look like storage lockers, which I guess they are. Since these decoy launchers are never loaded in port. They are normally filled with long tubes when the ship is at sea. Again precaution I suppose.
I won't be home for a few days, so no new pics. Sorry. As for Felipe, I'll show you the adaptation I did. When I get home, practically I noticed the error because on the Ustinov they squeezed in a liferaft between the guidance radar and the hangar superstructure, there I noticed the radar was higher and it was standing on a support which was actually connected to the hangarsuperstructure. I don't have really good pictures of that area, so anything is welcome there.

I thought Kashtan is kind of Tunguska turret for the ship but looks like it rather shares only same principle. Tunguska has independent lift of the missles by the way.

No, it appears to have a principle similar to the Tunguska, but it employs two gattling guns instead of the single barrel ones used by the Tunguska. It's a rather bulky system, but for the versatile nature of it, it's quite impressive.

Besides, having the missiles in place and the decoys loaded in port would be akin to having a battleship with shells in the breech while sitting in dock. An accident looking for a place to happen. "Honestly, who knew that 16" gun was going to just randomly go off and blow up the cafe?"

Wow, that Kashtan is something. It's a bloody lead storm when it fires, and the reloading's pretty damn cool too. Rotating magazine storage, vertically lifted into place on the system. Really cool stuff.

Yes, they are kinda different. Principle is the same, but Kashtan had to be adapted for use at sea, and that's not as easy as it seems. But then again, none of the "navalisations" of the Russians have proven to be easy or "the same". Guidance radars have often changed, look at the difference between Tor-M1 and Klinok, or the Orekh guidance radars used for the Shtil/Uragan compared to the Yozh system etc.
Same happened with Kashtan I guess, they wanted the guidance radar on the weapons unit, but they had to change the radars in order to use it at sea...

Here are some pictures of a project 712 Ocean Going Salvage Tug, they were built in Finland, not in Russia. Russia has three of them in service, one in the Black Sea Fleet (Shaktyor), one in the Baltic Fleet (SB-921/Paradoks) and one in the Northern Fleet (which is SB-406). Aparantly they all have different colours. Shaktyor's hull is Black, while Paradoks has a grey hull. My biggest problem is that I don't have any clear pictures of SB-406. I only have her in small, while towing K-159 (which sank during under tow) and while joining the 2005 exercise. However on these pictures the light is very difficult and practically makes me doubt between dark grey (like the other North Fleet ships) or black... I know there were some (more or less blurry) pictures when the ships were anchored North of Iceland with the tugs going to Kuznetsov and Velikiy for help or supply. I don't have these pictures unfortunately, otherwise it could give certainty about the colors of SB-406.

Well, I was aboard Moskva this morning. Despite to have to listen for one hour the Russian Navy band plus some national "country" style songs from another band we were fortunate to spend about an hour visiting the cruiser. Sadly we were not allowed to enter any structures so basically we did the tour on the main deck from the stern to the bow of the ship. I took some nice detailed photos and I will post a few in the next few days. Hmmm, that Trumpeter Slava is looking to me........

I use Gunze too, 334 (Barley grey) to be exact. This color is rather for Soviet era projects. Russian ships are painted with darker color. You can take 334, for example, and by adding black (Gunze 2) make it darker.
I think Gunze 48 will be closest to it.

I think it's always hard to figure out the correct colour from just a few photographs due to variances in light etc. And I even taken photos of photos of Sovremenny 620 myself when it visited Stockholm some 10 years ago, but even those I don't trust

Good luck with that. I hate mixing paints...

Here is some progress in SB-406. I also advanced on the windows etc. As you can see I made the bouncing cushion from seperate pieces of stretched sprue, and even the number of these parts is correct. I'm going as far as my patience can take me on this one!

The hull is not really perfect, yet I'm still testing new ways and methods and I'm quite happy with the result after all.

Cool to see these photos. I was stationed in the UK 03-06(U.S. Navy), and had was able to go on the Admiral Levchenko and then later on the Admiral Chabanenko. Two ships that I thought I'd never have a chance to see, let alone be onboard. I've been following the Soviet/Russian Navy since I was in 3rd grade. This was like a dream come true. So, when the 1/350 Udaloy kit from Trumpeter came out I rushed and got two of them , and am now waiting on a Udaloy II kit.
