I am going to pick up a 1/350 Sovremenny kit later this week. Odd thing is the Udaloy class Admiral Panteleyev kit is about twice as much. The reviews on them make them out to be pretty similar in quality, size, etc. Why is the Udaloy twice the price?
Who are you? I'll look into it.

And I have *no* idea why it cost so much more- or, conversely, why Sovremenny was so cheap.

Thanks. Grudingly using IE again.

Have any of the Sovremennys or Udaloys used green anti-fouling? Been thinking that it would look pretty good, especially on the nice lines of a Udaloy.

Hello Guys,

have to bring this topic back up with some nice pictures!
Mr. Grumpy, I don't think any of the Udaloys or Sovremennies have used green anti-fouling. All Russian ships use Red anti-fouling. Might change in the future though with the new silicone based paints.

Since I could only upload 3 pictures at a time, here are some more pictures for our great Krivak builders (eg Bluehawk).

How are the other Russian programs progressing nowadays? Show your stuff guys!!!
I'm busy with the Project 712 Ocean Going Salvage Tug SB-406, which was involved in the Atlantic Exercise in 2004 with the Kuznetsov Group. After that I have to decide whether to continue with the Kuznetsov herself (although I'll have to find a good way to peel off the paint and repaint her) or start the Sergei Osipov (Boris Chilikin class replenisher). making the plans for that one has already started.
But first things first of course, I'm currently breaking my neck on that Pr.712! And this one is supposed to be easy compared to the Altay (Pamir class) which is also somewhere to be started in the future!

Ah Roel- those are VERY nice!! Thank you very much! :thanks:

Now, what are those bulges in the hull above Vinogradov's screws? I've never seen those!

Honestly,
I don't know... I do however think they had some trouble with their "flat" bottoms. So practically I think they just adapted the shape of the hull to either get a better flow around their propellor or reduce vibration/noise created by the flat bottom of the ship aft.
As you can see they seem to be an extension of the middle ridge, forming a half circular pattern around the propellor. I've noticed these before on the Levchenko dry dock picture, but since that one is long distance I wasn't too sure about it. This picture I adapted by gamma balance to make the bulbs more clear.
I did the same with the Ladniy picture since the underside of a ship is always quite dark. You'll also be surprised to find something below the keel of the Krivak if you lighten the bow dry dock picture a bit... Seems to be a hull mounted sonar there.

Today I made some progress on the SB-406. First level is nearly finished. Have to paint it before I can add the second deck.
With the new Trumpeter Udaloy I guess I'll stay with the Udaloy pictures for a while. Whether you like it or not, I'll make this topic alive again :heh: :heh: :wave_1:

Well, I've been waiting for all the PE options before I start anything.

Of course, with Kirov and Udaloy II coming....

Hey, can anybody get nice shots of the upper foredeck of the Udaloy II? I have intentions of rebuilding a Udaloy kit, and so far as I have noticed, all the differences are the forward deck, where they replaced the Rastrub missiles with Moskits, and rebuilt the gun deck to remove the lower AK-100. I'm wondering at the differences, so that when I get into my Modern/What If Russian/Soviet warship set, I'll know what needs to be rebuilt. I already know there's a lot of deck to rebuild for my plans on the Kiev-II Class, which will be built in like with the retirement of the Granat missile system for the Moskit and standardization of the AK-130 gun system in the fleet. The Fun part will be getting the VLS SAM systems done, since I'll have to do those from scratch. But I'm rambling again.

Practically the biggest differences are AFT....
The two quadruple torpedo launchers have been removed. Upper deck lengthened and two times five fixed torpedo tubes added (behind a rectangular hatch at approx same position and the quadruple ones).
Of course you also have the four AK-630's replaced by one Kashtan on each side midships.
And next to that the Rastrub missiles replaced by Moskit launchers and of course the addiiton of the Bandstand radar and removal of the Eye Bowl radars. And of course the replacement of the main guns, but the Kinzhal launchers have remained the same, so the foredeck is not that different.

Sean, is that a hidden request for Kirov pictures? Well at least we know what they use that strange device (which can also be found on Slava and others) for at sea... And why they always put rails on the deck, that's a long way to carry a torpedo

Enjoy the pics. I'll try to keep the promise that I'll put up pictures when I have the time and possibility. I'm leaving on holidays next week though.

Well, I would assume, on the one picture of the Udaloy II, that the system sitting right beside the stack on that raised platform is the Kashtan. I haven't seen a good detailed image of the forward deck though, and I'm sure the raised section was extended for the AK-130. They can't have extended the forward deck too far, if there's SAMs on the forward deck, unless you mean forward of the gun mountings. Besides that, it can't be too far extended, since the Moskit launchers are bigger than the Rastrub, thus they can't retract, and are fixed at their angle. Unless you mean they extended the central support for the bridge deck, courtesy of the Moskit's wider launchers.

So somebody's re-doing a Kirov model, will it include the Kashtan system used on the Pyotr Veliky? There's enough of the cold war era Kirovs out there with just the AK-630's, I know they upgraded at least one of the class with the Kashtan system. Or is there a producer out there who happens to make a PE of the Kashtan, just a random thought on my head. There would be a market, being that they've added it onto several of their warships, like the Pyotr, the Udaloy II, and I think they put it on the Kuznetsov.

Hello again,

Yes the Kashtan is mounted where the aft AK-630's were on the regular Udaloys. Kashtan was also mounted on Neustrashimy as well as the Talwar class frigates and Sovremenny II's. The Admiral Nakhimov (third of the Kirov class) was also fitted with Kashtan, but she lacked the Kinzhal launchers (she was intended to carry them and hence fitted for, but not with, since they had a shortage of these launchers due to the Udaloys). Practically Trumpeter has them in their Pyotr Velikiy kit. In 1/350 I guess they'll have them with their Chabanenko kit.

As for Chabie, they didn't extend the forward part... The AK-130 sits on the main deck, where the forward Ak-100 used to be. The platform behind it is still the same, although there is a little change on the facing of the superstructure. The Rastrub launchers had plenty of space, they didn't have to alter the superstructure for the Moskits I think.
There used to be a good head-on shot available on the web, I'll search for that one. It was taken from above/forward. So there was a good view of the superstructure and forward deck.
Here is another shot where you can see the mounting of the AK-130, they did put it on a sort of platform since it's sitting quite high (logical since the Udaloy has quite some sheer).

Thanks plenty, Neptune, I was wondering about the 130 mounting, since I had trouble getting a good view of it. I have plan to modify a Udaloy into a Udaloy II, and so it was on my list of ideas. Granted I might have problems acquiring the Kashtan, since it's hard to come by, but it might be handy to have comparison images when I get around to that project.

Hello Sean,

Actually from the ones I posted only a small number come from Airbase. The rest is from my intelligence agency (which practically consists of me, me and eh... me) :woo_hoo:

I'll send you the hull plan and cutaways of the Neustrashimiy because they are too big to upload here. If you want pictures of her, there are plenty on Airbase, if you wish I can transfer them. Here are some dry dock pictures of Neustrashimiy, notice the old-fashioned propellors with regular hub cap. These dry dock shots are from Lyohin, posted at Airbase.

Your lucky day I guess.
Sometime back I started to make a 1/72 Kashtan. With moderate succes, I never finished it because my methods weren't good enough and it looked like crap.
Anyway, everytime I have a project, of course I collect loads of pictures. So here are some of them, including a nice drawing, enjoy! (and good luck)

Most difficult to find is the backside, but I found one! Maybe it wasn't so good that I found one, since it seems to be quite complicated! I have more pictures, but I won't be putting everything here since it shows the same thing from different angles, not really necessary for 1/700 or 1/350 builds.

And more for Sauragnmon and others:

On picture tagged Chabanenko17 you can see what is now below the bridge, on the platform where the aft AK-100 used to be. Some entrances, some decoys and they also moved the saluting guns forward on that platform.

Hi all! I'm new to this site and I'm just about to start on a Trumpeter Sovremenny 956E. I thought I'd make it one of the Baltic Fleet ships, pennant 610 or 620.

One thing I noticed was that their hull colour seems to be a darker shade of grey compared to the other Sovremennys. Is this correct? If so, what would you suggest I use (preferably Gunze Acrylic)?

As far as I heard it was Admiral Levchenko and Chabanenko (Udaloy II) who accompanied her.
Also Sergei Osipov, which was already patrolling in support of Nikolai Chicker (Ocean going tug operating of Tsavliris) joined the group afterwards.

And like Vladimir said, Moskva joined them in the Atlantic coming from the Black Sea.
