Re: Calling all USS North Carolina & Washington fans
Paul,
Good catch with the upper 5 battery and the aft superstructure being somewhat squashed. Being an old retired weapons inspector for the USN I fell back to my Trust but Verify days and noticed that if the 5/32 correction is made to the first 5" mount the what appeares to be alignment of the center of the 5 mount and the quad 40mm on the top of the chart & pilot house will be off by the amount the 5" mounts are moved. Could it be that there is a more serious compounding problem here? I dont have the armored conning tower glued together yet so I havent been able to dry fit it and get a measurement from its face to the rear of turret #2 barbette. It looks like the opening in the 01 superstructure deck for the incline ladder down to the main deck may also be to far forward. The Squashed aft superstructure problem looked at first glance to be a simple fix, again good catch. It does look like because the height of the aft 40mm superstructure deck part C41 had raised the angle parts C22 &C36 will have to be changed as well as the angle extensions cast on the Mk 38 director foundation so they all line up. Will the corrections and additions to this kit ever end?

For BB-55, at the same time she went from straight Ms-12 to 12mod. Not sure nor do I care for BB-56 as she enters real service in 12mod.CWatson wrote: I forgot to ask. During what time period was the 5-S replaced by 5-N?
The ships camouflage site does not mention when.

Colors would be blue/grey over ANA light grey. Photos will tell you how many, can be 2-4, usually 2.CWatson wrote:Now that the ships colors are confirmed, who about the the Kingfishers? What would their colors be May-June 42'?
Is it known how many were carried? 1-3?
Thanks again,

How do I get the pen to write here? Now my screen's all smeared with ink.........

It should be noted that Classic Warships sold their molds to Yankee ModelWorks who lists it as Kit 35044, price TBA.

He still makes the odd master or two, but he's been out of the production side for maybe a year and a half to two(???) years now.

...and does anybody do this in photoetch. The cast on kit representation is terrible.

Re: Calling all USS North Carolina & Washington fans
these are the vision slits in the amoured conning tower. The frame in front has a piece of glass, that can be moved down so the blast from the guns does not shatter it. Very interesting being inside that much steel, but the vision is limited, which is why most captains did not want to con the ship during battle from the conning tower, they would rather be on the bridge.

I used the Lion Roar PE set for my North Carolina and I think it's a good choice!
I've checked out this thread from time to time and I wish I knew about all the accuracy problems with this kit when I was doing mine...it was built pretty much OOB goofs and all

Re: Calling all USS North Carolina & Washington fans
Does anyone know or better still have a photo of the stern and wake lights on BB-55? For once I know the colors of the lights but no idea how they were mounted. All the Walk Around photos Ive seen either do not get back that far on the deck or the quad 400 tubs hide the lights. Also the stern chocks, are they open or closed. Im building the 1/350 Washington and assume the lights and chock arrangement would be the same. The Booklet of General Plans Im using, last revision date being March 1946, indicates that there was a smoke generator on the stern, port side between the quad 40mm tub and wake lights, would this be the same type of generator, four cylinders, stacked two on two, one sees on destroyers?

Or this?
Save the picture and then view with your image software. The resolution is high so you can zoom in close.

The two stern photos are a big help in more ways then one. They give a whole different perspective on the ship. I know Ill be looking at them over and over during my build trying to find that one little extra detail to add. Thanks for posting them.

Re: Calling all USS North Carolina & Washington fans
I dont know if this has been mentioned before but it was pointed out to me today that there may be too many portholes on the bridge structure. I enlarged a photo on the computer and counted the actual portholes, check that to the Floating Drydock drawings in Randall Shokers NC Book and then compared the results to the Trumpeter 1/350 kit parts. What I found was parts B17 & B18 have 21 portholes each on the top row; the real ship has only 19 per side. The pilot house front, part E3 has 9 portholes, again the real ship has only 7. Small problems, yes, worth losing any sleep over, thats up to you. Does it make my wonder what other little surprises are still lurking out there to be found, you bet.

Re: Calling all USS North Carolina & Washington fans
I have another equipment question dealing with North Carolina and Washington. Both sets of drawings I have, 1/350 from Randall Shokers book and the Booklet of General Plans for Washington show on the flag and signal bridge a 1 Meter Range Finder and on Washington a Signal Telescope. Any one know what these two items look like, or where I can find information on them?
