Installing additional Gallery Deck level structural details
Some additional explanations regarding hangar deck overhead details: the longitudinal girders installed in the hangar deck at the gallery deck level as well as the forward bomb elevator, are consistent with AOTS drawing A6/2.
Also, there are some improvements to the undersides of the kit's bow 20mm platforms consistent with photos of the real ship. Structural supporting girders have been added as well as 20mm ready service ammunition rooms, aircraft ready service ammunition room, antenna mast operating gear room and Radio Room 9. The slice through the ammunition room in the middle photo is necessary to allow for a large transverse structural girder that supports the flight deck to pass through.
Furthering detailing will be added later.
For those adding these structural details, I recommend doing so before installing the PE catwalks.

Detailing the port side Flight Deck Overhang
Port side flight deck overhang supporting girders and rooms have been installed onto the kit's flight deck parts' undersides. The flight deck has been dry-fit for the photos below.
The supporting structures of the 20mm galleries are not correct and will be altered.
Hull painting will be cleaned up and evened out as well after further detailing.
A comment about the shape of the kit's hull: the top photo highlights Trumpy's Essex kit's chubby "supertanker hull" shape problem which is similar to Trumpy's Hornet kit's hull although not as bad. The real Essex class ships had a much finer hull shape below the hangar deck. Essex class ships cut through the water, they did not plow through it as the Trumpy kit would have you imagine.

- Several GMM PE watertight doors have been added to the exterior of the
hangar deck bulkhead parts at the gallery deck level. Their location was shown
in the AOTS drawings (they'll be painted later). The overhang is now ready for
the installation of catwalks and further detailing. The PE watertight doors
allowed access to the catwalks below the overhang. The catwalks will be
fabricated and installed later.

- Notice how the flight deck girders meet the bulkheads directly on the butt
straps. Six portholes for the admiral's cabin have been added using a pin vise.
Note that the flight deck above the deck-edge elevator has been trimmed back
flush with the bulkhead above the hangar deck opening consistent with photos
of the real ship.

I don't want this to sound like another installment of the Mutual Admiration Society but Steve's work is truly great. And his work is very important to all of us who really want to build an outstanding model. I think accuracy is a very important aspect of building a model and starting with a accurate model (that reads cut away the goofy stuff) and then layering on scratch-build, and PE, and paint, and weathering makes for outstanding results. Thanks to Tracy White for his great knowledge database and his efforts to let us all read what he knows. Every bit of information does not go unnoticed.
One question for Steve... if you cut away the #2 elevator edge on the flight deck then are you planning to build your model with the elevator in the down position? Won't there be a gap with the elevator up?

Question for all, during what normal ship activities would all elevators be down? When the time comes, I'd like to arrange Yorktown's air group in positions for a proper operational activity with all elevators in the lowered position.

I'll be fixing all the elevators on mine in the lowered position. This has proven to result in much better alignment of the stringers while preserving the proper position of the girders.
The kit's elevator tracks are not accurate so I replaced them with scratch-built tracks. There are 58 parts to the new elevator tracks. Photos of the real ships indicate that the fore and aft tracks were slightly different. See:

The position of these catwalks is marked in pencil consistent with AOTS
drawings and photos. Generally the longitudinal stringers are uniformly spaced.
But the transverse girders are deliberately NOT uniformly spaced. Their
spacing is consistent with AOTS drawings.
