Hi all

A Portuguese friend of mine is now working on the November class sub (I believe it's the K-4 - ZVEZDA kit), and the instructions call for a 'Sea Blue' (if I can recall him correctly).
He and I have seen models of the same sub with different colour schemes, does anyone know the correct colours.

"Sea blue" is probably just another way of trying to specify an "off black" or "engine black". Try mixing flat black with a very dark grey ("German grey") at about a 50/50 ratio to get a nice sub color. teh bottom of the hull should probably be sprayed with a light grey mist to simulate fading below the water line while surfaced.

Above the waterline, they are black. Best way to depict the dull black is to take engine black and add just a touch of white to it, may 2%. You want the "charcoal briquette" color. From a B&W photo fo a November under construction, it looks as if they had a different color from halfway down the hull; most probably red.

Sorry, I can not post a direct picture yet.

It has unique form of sail - not approached even close by any other sub existing and past in the world as far as I know . I encourage everyone to have a close look at this sub on the link above - you will not regret spending you time (I hope)

Still would be nice to know if there is a kit for this sub. Encourage manufacturers to think of making it - in injection plastic pls. I would be the first customer.

What is the status of the November class sub shown in your photos? And what is it that she is resting on?

She's being scrapped. She's resting on some blocks, which is normal for dry docking. Some of them seem to be made of concrete, some of them made out of steel. The Russians have a strange way to put subs sideways on a dry dock. Same structure can be found in the Sevmash yards in Severodvinsk, but this one is probably part of Zvezdochka.
First thing they do when they start scrapping (actually it already happens on the transport ship) is burning off all the growth (that's why she looks so clean). That is what has happened on this one. Then she goes alongside for internal stripping and eventually they go in the dry dock to remove the sail and in the end the other parts. There's always plenty of gold and silver in their electronic components.
As you can see she's not alone, I think there is a Delta behind her. Strangely, this baby has received new painting before she went to the scrapyard. They added a "shield" on the front of the sail, something they also did with the Victors that were being transported to the scrapyard with her.

There is a prebuilt kit from Takara in 1/700 scale.

I am a 1/350 injection plastic modeller so far. Hope sometime some manufacturer makes this great model "in my configuration". Big hope for Trumpeter who seem to likeSoviet modern ships most.

Hi,

I was able to get one of these kits recently and it looks pretty good in the box. One question I have is that this kit has a pair of auxiliary propeller pods that extend from each side aft. The Global Security site page on the Akula class subs state that they are fitted with auxiliary props. I haven't been able to find any images showing them fitted like the kit - so after my long winded preamble my question: Is the kit correct/accurate with regards to these auxiliary prop pods?

Hello Felix,
you didn't mention the manufacturer of your kit, but yes the Akula has two propellors aft in retractable tubes. Basically a reverse T-shapes hatch opens, inside on the - part of the T there are tubes mounted, with inside a four bladed prop. One on each side on the lower aft part of the sub. Here's a picture of an Akula's backside. You can see the starboard pod extended if you look well. I have better stuff, but that's not coming online.

That photo is helpful but now raises question of the accuracy of how the Alanger kit depicts these.
