For a nation that ruled the seas for over two centuries and built some of the greatest warships afloat, I can only say "BRAVO"!!

(But then again, I am just slightly biased, no?)

Actually, during most of the period when Britain had been the preeminent sea power of the world, the single greatest (size, weight, firepower) warships in the world had belonged to someone else.

"The single greatest" WarshipS

The English Navy had really only become preeminent starting from about 1680, all the hot air about the Spanish armada 100 years before not withstanding. If you randomly select a year from 1680-1945, the chances are at least 75% that the top 2 - 3 largest or strongest warship to be found in the world that year flies someone else's flag.

In fact, during those 265 years, there were more years (about 90) when the strongest warships in the world flew the French flag than there were years when the strongest warships flew the English flag.

Yes, in 1780-1815, the French made some of the finest ships ever to sail under British Colors.
If an unfriendly power had attempted to impose on America the mediocre educational performance that exists today, we might well have viewed it as an act of war.

Indeed, French warship designs from around 1740s still remains some of the finest sailing under the English flag in 1830.

It took exceptions to prove the rule.

It took you to identify those exceptions.

Rule stands.

Except, in this case, when you remove all the exceptions, there is almost no rule left.

I fear, like trainspotting, the best is well in the past now.

Extinct land animals are a heck of a lot more interesting than the monotonous bunch of hairy things we have now. Most are just variants on each other depending on 1, 2 or 3 hooves.

Never stood on the end of a platform so cant answer that, and my crystall ball needs cleaning.
But weather 1,2 or 3 hooves they are all new hooves(evolution) so interesting to the modeller ?

And i agree 100% the lines of an hms Hood or scarnhorst, or nearly any prewar ship are things of beauty compared to most we are dished up these days, but allas thats all we have so must make do with :(
