Calling all King George V-class (WWII) fans

I'm glad that it sorted out the deck/UP/40mm question, I forgot that I had those photo's. It makes me feel better as well because now I can do my PoW with a wood finish deck and know that it's right. Personally I hate to see a deck painted grey or blue or multi-coloured, even if thats how the real ship was painted, to me it just spoils the look and takes away from the beauty of the ship, the same with camoflauge, some ships look good with it, such as the KGV's, due to their being very "blocky" and it gives a kind of cool "Gothic Fortress" look, whereas to me, it is criminal to camo the Iowa's and hide their beautiful lines (thank God they never camo'd Hood, that would be sacrilege). I'm going to do my Tamiya Missouri in a Korean War fit, anyway, it would be nice to see the finished result with your PoW, best of luck with the build, Aidan.

Would like to ask all the KGV experts, where is the exact location of the navigation lights of the KGV class? What is the color of the life rafts (is that navy blue or grey color?) ? Thanks.

Raven and Roberts write that Howe was similar to KGV but had a very robust AA fit:

Six additional quadruple PomPoms (two on the lower bridge, two astride and just aft of B turret and two on the fantail)
Eighteen single 40mm Bofors including two on top A turret roof.

She had 34 single 20mm mounts in 1945 but they were all removed in September 1945.

Howe also had an emergency control station mounted on the aft stack where KGV's searchlight platform existed.

No, the additional six PomPoms were 4-barrel PomPoms.

British Battleships of World War Two by Raven and Roberts (Naval Institute Press) has an excellent drawing of Howe in her late war fit.

Well this is one of my first builds a couple of years ago. It is HMS KING GEORGE V from Mini Hobbie Models at 1/350 scale. His majesty is built stright out of the box, without any PE or effort to make the model historically correct. I just took the box and followed the instructions. except from the addition of lastic rails from Heller's 1/400 kits. the colours are all Humbrol enamels and painted with brush. I think it is quite satisfactory given my neglidgence of many modelling techniques...
What do you think???

And now, a rather basic question to you all, KGV fans, but not to me....

What�s the differences between Tamiya�s 1/350 KGV and PoW ??? I spotted a different light AA configuration, but thats all I can see...

The Main difference other than the AA guns is that the POW has a catapult and Walrus float plane in between her funnels. On the Tamiya KGV, this is replaced with a raised deck where all the ship's motor launches are kept, in turn making room for more AA armament where the boats were kept on the POW.

May I add that King George is in the late war configuration whereas Prince of Whales is in the configuration of the fatal day...

I have not seen the Tamiya kit but I think that King George V can be built and in the early war configuration with the catapult between the two parts of the superstructure and the boats atop the aft part.

I have built both kits, and if memory serves me, KGV did not come with any of the parts for the catapult area, and I know for sure that it does not include the walrus float plane.

The POW kit has a deck piece that has the catapilt molded on it, and this piece was not included in my KGV either. I think it may be a separate sprue for each kit.

At least the paint scheme is much easier on the KGV!!! I think I am about to tear down my POW and repaint her for the 3rd or 4th time now, maybe I'll finally be satisfied with the outcome so I can post her here alongside my KGV.

So...if I want to do either an early PoW, or early KGV, I�d better get a Tamiya PoW, and not the Tamiya KGV, right ???
