The wall with Mexico?

Hopefully they'll be more land mines on the Mexican border

Let me recommend to you a beautiful foot path south of San Diego. Don't worry about the "Achtung Minen!" signs, they are only for Mexicans.

Hardly. Truss bridges are built with much higher safety factors than ships, and are often specifically designed to last 100 years or more. Ships would hardly float in water, let alone economically, if they were to have similar safety factors.

Chuck, you miss the point: it's in Chicago, possibly the most corrupt city on Earth known for it's corrupt civic programs. I'd rather cross a bridge in Seoul.

This is the city that had to shut down when the river sprung a leak; remember?

Ahhh, but would you rather cross a bridge in Minnesota? Some of those bridges are considerably younger than the Kitty Hawk, I hear. :wave_1: :wave_1:

I thought overhaul of that particular bridge was postponed to pay for a new sports stadium. Am I wrong?

Doubt the overhual of the bridge would have fixed the specific problem. The problem wasn't really identified to be potentially critical until after the I-35 bridge went down. One gets the impression the engineers who inspected the Bridge decided the only way to tell whether the substandard gusset plate would be critical was to wait and see if the bridge falls. It fell, so they intoned with authority: "It was critical". This is all the more amazing since the problem they face is one that a C students half way through the first Engineering Statics class should be prepared to solve using nothing more than pencil and paper. But I doubt anyone will be fired.

I'm glad we don't do anything that practical here. When I'm wrong a dead animal gets a backache.

Ahh, Chicago. The city where rivers flood down and bridges fall up. Werner knows what I mean

I live within 6 miles of where Arnold Schwarzenegger is said to "work". I went to School in Madison, so things happening in Illinois, Wisconsin and Minnesota still draws me attention.

Just a thought: imagine that the passion for ships to prevent send them all to the scrapyards. I believe that most of them must be dismantled, unfortunately, and there's no way to escape it.

Scrap metal prices are going through the roof still. Scrap yards are profitable again. The USN also removes certain materials before delivering them to be scrapped.

I see now issue with scrapping Connie. With JFK destined for Miami unless she sinks under tow, Sara almost certainly in Rhode Island, Ranger looking good in Oregon and Midway doing very well in San Diego, there is almost no place for her. I am more concerned about having a reserve fleet, an asset that has proved useful in the past.
