Calling all USS Enterprise CVN-65 fans

I went on an impulse and decided to get the Tamiya Enterprise, it was already �89.99 down from �119.99 and the shop knocked another �5 off as well. Its bigger than anything I've attempted before, but I think it should keep me quiet for a fair old time!
I nearly went on another impulse and got the Trumpeter Nimitz off ebay, but I think one carrier is more than enough, though I've heard the Nimitz is the better kit as it has the hangar deck (Is this right?).
I don't think I'll rush into building the Big E - got the Alangar Delta IV SSBN to do yet!

Yes the Nimitz has a hanger deck,but you have detail it to make look out standing,Cyrus Tan, Kelly Quirk and some others.Me no maybe the next CVN but not the 2005 Nimtiz I built. And don't rush your project haste makes waste. Good Luck on your projects

OK... I'm still working on getting my 1/32 dio of a Tomcat launch (similar to Masa Narita) but from Cat #1 on the Big E. Some questions: How far is it from the #1 JBD to the catapult? I am guessing the cat track to be about 2 to 3" wide but how wide are the plates along side of the track? Do all planes "hook up" to the shuttle in the same location on the track? How far down does a Tomcat "hook up"?

These may seem stupid/obvious questions but I'm a snot nosed farm kid from rural Minnesota that has never seen a carrier let alone stand on one.

Note the overboard discharges are not "bilge pumps" but discharges of sea water from cooling systems/auxiliary systems. The discharges from the main engineering spaces are below the water line.

My wife and children purchased me the kit for Fathers day. I am normally a from scratch builder but love the idea of building a kit from out of the box. Since my normal budget never allowed it.

I started out a couple days ago researching the project when i found this site and the awesome threads full of information and pictures, all of these will be a great help.

I noticed some issues surrounding the kit including the missing hanger deck. This from scratch sounds right up my alley.

I have a couple questions on the hanger deck topic and i am looking for links to images that may show detail. I did find some here, i have marked them for reference.

Can anyone tell me if the hanger deck is made up of many sections or is it one larger area that goes from one side to the other of the carrier?

I would also like to know if there is a diagram including what might be stored in and around each opening?

I have ordered some extra items including the Gold metal kits, also i purchased some kits that include more of the same aircrafts tamiya. item numbers 78009 & 78006

I am looking for a link that will enable me to purchase the minature figures and tow trucks if anyone knows of a link, please post it for me.

I have a good idea of lighting using LED's so I am busy collecting images of the carrier at night allowing me to see locations of lights in use.

Anyone with helpful information feel free to post here, email me etc...

Personally, I think you would have liked the Trumpeter aircraft better. More selection and you can tailor the airwing as you like. For figures, Eduard makes pre-painted 1/350 aircraft carrier figures (not sure of the part number - sorry). For decals for your airwing, Starfighter Decals makes killer decals to cover all of your needs (set 350-21 covers Big-E in 2001 during Operation Enduring Freedom) more info on him can be found on a link on the homepage here. Can't help with the details regarding the hangar deck - sorry. Enjoy your build. I hope to get back to my "beehinve" Enterprise project soon.

Thank you very much for answering my questions, i will hunt down and order the decals etc today. I recieved notice my Gold Metal kits have been shiped so im getting excitted.

Tracy White answered my hanger Deck Question so atleast i can make a start on the scratch building. Thanks Tracy.

I have saved some of the hanger deck images that display some content, i really just need to work out were they are in relation to the openings.

I'm building the Revell 1/400 kit and the launchers look like poop. All the pics I find online are of the latest model of the launchers. Any help is appreciated.

In addition to totally agreeing with the suggestion to use the Trumpeter aircraft instead of the Tamiya, I'd offer another.

Picking the time frame you intend to depict the ship is important. Not only will that determine which aircraft from which squadrons and Airwing you will need to display (as well as their paint schemes), but the ship will have changes to it as well that you might want to consider modeling.

The"Detail and Scale" volume 39 on the USS Enterprise, by Bert Kinzey has a wealth of outstanding photos of the ship and I found this book to be an invaluable reference. It depicts the ship as she was in the mid to late 1980s which is not too far off from when I believe the Tamiya kit was released. Even so, I found numerous discrepencies with the kit (such as changes to the port forward sponson, and the structures around the port quarter and stern) that were noticeably incorrect and not too difficult to scratch build.

Hello all!

I am looking some information about big E: Considering to build the Tamiya 1/350 kit as it is, with no conversions, what are the air wing squadrons that we can build? I know the Gold Medal decals for Enterprise air wing, but those decals are so generic... i intend to produce my own decals detailing each airplane with the real differences between those, but it have been very difficult to get photo refference of those airplanes to prepare the decals.
It is hard to me still to identify the time of the photos...
I have some test shots of 1/350 decals printed with ink-jet printer using Micromark clear sheets and it have been very good!
