Odds and Sods

Post by phil gollin »

As this board has the facility of adding photos, and I don't have a suitable web-site, I thought I'd post any interesting "finds" I come across.

See next post for first one.

This first one is from "The Journal of the Royal Corps of Naval Constructors" (their staff magazine) - No. 16, April 1951.

It is from an article by Mr C. J. W. Hopkins and it gives the reason for the bridges of British Aircraft Carriers being to Starboard.

About time for another one.

This is, as far as I know, a new variation on the reason why "ASDIC" was called "Asdic".

It comes from a comprehensive history of the Royal Naval Scientific Service printed in its Journal.

RN Deck Coverings - Part 1, photo 1 of 3

And now, for those fanatics about "Semtex" and other deck coverings, a couple of odd items.

The first is a set of three photos from the Bailey Committee files regarding a USN request for information regarding deck coverings.

Again from the Journal of The Royal Naval Scientific Service, this time from 1949.

It shows how extensive was the useage of Infra-Red equipment by the British in WW2. The use of equipment by British Nightfighters for IFF purposes is mentioned quite often. The "Tabby" night driving equipment again gets some mentions, but this is the first time I've seen a image from this equipment.

(With reference to "Tabby" equipment there is a good website at :- http://www.hmvf.co.uk/pdf/Tabby01.pdf )
