I looked at this last night;

As I recall, she had 18 Zeroes ( I believe A6m2) of 1 type, plus 3 more of another type (A6M3) of Zeroes on board, as well as 27 Bombers and 27 Torpedo Planes. I will double check tonight.

To be "hisotorically accurate," I don't think that there was ever a time where she had more than a handful of aircraft on the flight deck that morning.

Perhaps you might want to consider equipping her flight deck for a morning of Pearl Harbor portrayal.

Which kit do you have? How is the quality?

The reason for choosing Midway is simple... I fell in love with that HUGE "Hinomaru" painted on her deck, which is just impossible to let pass...

Kit ??? Who mentioned a kit ??? I have a set of plans from Akagi (3 sheets), and a big pile of plywood and balsa next to it...

I went out and bought a 1/450 Akagi.

The Hasegawa kit is not nearly as good as what we get from Tamiya...major fitment issues.

The deck planking, white lines and circle on the rearmost elevator are engraved into the deck...makes doing the giant red ball up forward impossible.

So, I plan on doing a Pearl Harbor Akagi, which will suit me fine.

Question: Anyone know who sells the PE accessories AND PE people for this scale? I think GMM does, but is there are distributor (that takes credit cards) that carries it?

Above are screen captures from the disc set titled Naval Vessels Collection of the Imperial Japan and show the flight deck markings these two carriers had late 1941 into 1942. Shokaku had a katakana "Shi" painted on the forward port side; Zuikaku had a katakana "Su" in the same position. Other IJN carrier flight ops in the archive footage does not reveal what other carriers had.

Plenty of IJN carrier footage in this set. :cool_2:

IJN DVDs

Post by Gone Asiatic »

How much are these DVD's please they luck something most useful to own and also are they available in the UK?
I couldn`t find any website, telephone, or address information on the DVD cases. You might try "googling" the discs` title.

Each disc was 5250 yen or some $50USD. I`ll try some searches and see what turns up.

Plenty of cruiser, battleship, destroyer and submarine pics!

I posted a question at the Japanese Ships & Navy Message Board, perhaps someone knows...

EDIT: They do! This is a reply I received from one of their members
If you go to Amazon's Japanese site (http://www.amazon.co.jp) and search for the following string

日本海軍艦艇集

in DVDs (use cut & paste), then both DVDs will turn up for sale at 5,250 yen each.

I just ran a search, and they both turned up. Searching in English usually won't turn up anything (unless the original is in English), even if there is an English title on the cover.
They are here:

http://www.amazon.co.jp/exec/obidos/ASI ... oding=UTF8

http://www.amazon.co.jp/exec/obidos/ASI ... oding=UTF8

If you need to register, press the help button at the top of the screen. Here you can find your way through Japanese ordering and change some language settings. I ordered them, see what happens.

Excellent!

Good work!

I cannot overstate the wealth of totally cool footage on these discs. Includes naval reviews and maneuvers of the 1930s, December 8th aboard Kido Butai carriers, life aboard ships, a Naval parade through Tokyo`s Ginza district (1920`s) and some good ole` down home wartime propoganda!

IJN fans - Good luck!

I can also recommend this book: Diamond Sha's "IJN Warship Album Aircraft Carrier & Sea Plane Tender "

Image

(Picture stolen from http://www.ijn.dreamhost.com/)

Only a few pictures of the carriers or tenders each, so not a really about a single class. The beaty of this book is that the photographs are both printed full page as well as in excellent quality. The printing outperforms all other IJN books I have (Kojinsha, Gakken). I suspect the pics have been tweaked a bit, but who cares. For example, it has two excellent pics of Chiyoda/Chitose, showing all details. They also have 4 other volumes. Available at hobby link japan.

If you receive the DVDs and have trouble playing them, if you have an X-Box, try running them on that.

Are the DVD's region 3 or region-free? I can always just hack my computer player to make it a region-free player for caps but it would be nice to play it on the TV.
On the back, MPEG-2 is written as well as a small drawing of a globe with a "2" in the middle with NTSC next to the globe - me thinks this must mean region 2?

Bump!

Figured with the Hasegawa kit out I'd get this topic hopping again.

First a word of warning in regards to the Hasegawa Photo-Etch sets. There is some confusion that has sprung up, I believe, because of the names they gave the sets. You have:
Basic Detail Set A
Basic Detail Set B
Basic Detail Set C
Super Detail Set

The super detail set is NOT a combination of any other grouping; it is its own, separate set that is just the supports for underneath the flight deck. So if you want the Hasegawa railings, and inclined ladder parts, you need more than just the super detail set.

Tracy,

My Akagi is supposed to arrive tomorrow, and since I can hardly wait I'm checking in here.

Per your comments about the Super Detail set. I ordered that with my model (so I suppose I'll have the answer tomorrow) but all the websites say that the Super Detail set INCLUDES sets A, B and C. Am I about to be dissapointed?

Yes and no.
It does not contain sets A, B, and C, that are sold separately. It contains PART A, PART B, and Part C, and I suspect 90% of the world is confused about what you get with it. I actually held one in my hands on Sunday, and the three PARTS are only for the under-deck truss work. The instructions have to be seen to be believed. It also contains white metal parts to represent the bedding wrapped and tied to the island at Pearl Harbor.

What is there is nicely done, so you will not be disappointed in that regard. However, it DOES NOT contain sets A, B, and C with the other photo-etch pieces. I believe that Hasegawa made a very bad choice when they named it the super set.

Unless he's talking about the $473 Super Set offered by Cyber-Hobby, in which case all PE is included, or so it seems ;)
