I have some Guesses but let the Expert speak....

Great work! I believe that is the Hiryu PE deck from LionRoar, is it not?

I don't mean to revive such an old thread, heh.

But I was just wondering if any of you had worked with the Hiryu/Soryu Aoshima sets, and if so, what your experience was with the out of the box constructions?

Actually, I was referring to Hiryu. No new release of Soryu as of yet. Don't know why as it would be a winner.

In that case, how good is the old Aoshima Soryu kit?

Not great. One of the best correction jobs I've seen is on the Omani site. See the page and scroll down for the step by step build portion: http://www.h3.dion.ne.jp/~mokei/e-frame-sitemap.htm

Hey guys....

Based on many of the models done by people in the gallery and on other websites, it almost seems like the XF55 deck Tan from Tamiya does not represent well the deck color of these two carriers.

I've tried the color on my Akagi. It looks fine, except I feel it is still a little 'flat' for a color.

Does anyone have any tips on how to create a nice looking 'wooden' deck on these carriers?

I'd like to see the link. I wouldn't rush to judgement. Aoshima has a very good track record with its 1/700 retoolings. The retooled Hiryu is exquisite.

I have just received my new retooled Aoshima 1/700 Soryu and I must say it looks excellent. I haven't got my Hiryu kit in front of me to compare but it looks at first glance on a par. Certainly light years ahead of the old kit, not sure how it compares to resin kits of Soryu, except its loads cheaper!
The hull is in 2 halves and you get hangar sections to go under the elevators, giving you the option of modelling the elevators up or down. Everything looks crisp and nicely moulded, I can't say its the best 1/700 ship kit but it looks like it could be among the best available at the moment. You get 12 planes, which I think are just about the nicest that come with a kit, ordnance is included for them as is landing gear for the Vals, you only need etch props to finish them off. A set of deck marking decals are included for those (like me) who don't want to paint the markings on.
I also got the Aoshima etch for this kit. I have to say it's a bit pricey considering you only get the masts and crash barrier/wind protector things for the flight deck. You will need to buy seperate railings, deck edge nets and a/c props as well anything else you can think of.
That said the kit does look very nice indeed and is well worth getting in my opinion.

thanks
Mike

Sounds very good to me. Thanks for the quick review.

Mperor - flight deck color - try using a wash of burnst umber over the paint - I think you'll like the result.

Ps - the generic detailing sprues are included but Aoshima have new tooled 25mm twins on their own sprues. The only thing used from the generic detailing sprues are the twin 5' barrels and some boats.

thanks

It's an interesting kit: the boat stowage area on the stern & the bridge structure, at least, varied between her commissioning and her final battle at Midway. I think in the 1941 version the boat stowage is already "covered", i.e., the boats are mounted on the deck rather than in recesses. I guess we'll see both a "China station" 1938-1940 version [could not find an English TROM for Soryu prior to formation of Kido Butai, and no time to search Japanese sources at present] and a "Midway" 1942 version marketed shortly.
