Calling all USS Indianapolis CA-35 & USS Portland CA-33 fans

Here are some (not very good) photos of my 1/192 model of Indianapolis at the time of her loss in 1945. I started with the old BlueJacket Chicago kit, sawed the hull in half and added a plug to lengthen it to the Portland class dimension, and basically threw most of the rest of the kit away. My initial inspiration was the double-spread centerfold in the old Profile on her. Since finishing the model about ten years ago I've learned that the latest research shows the planked fore-deck was probably painted deck blue and the lower hull may have been gray, not blue.

I also have one of Don Pruel's 1/192 Baltimore hulls I hope to get to one day.

I have the Tamiya 1/700 scale USS Indianapolis and wanted to build it as the Portland as she appeared in 1942. I have found very few photos on line of the Portland in that period. I found more of the Indianapolis but comparing the few photos I do have they look like the bridges are different. Does any one have any info, profiles they can scan for me?

Thanks for all the links Nikos. I have most of those sites book marked. I am looking for pics and profiles as the Sweet P appeared in 1942. As you can see from all the links you sent me there plenty of pre war shota as well as those after her midwar refit. Thanks again

Hi John:

In Model Art #27 there is in excellent article although, in Japanese showing how to backdate the Indy kit into a late 1942 Indianapolis. There are clear photos on how to do this if you run into a snag on your pursuit of the Sweet Pea.

hello everyone.

are the hulls for the Northampton v Indianapolis hulls are the same???i have the floating drydocks bu plans for uss Chicago Northampton class and have hull plans for Indianapolis.the hulls look the same and the plans i have for both seem to match.although the Indianapolis is larger not by much?i could use the hull plans from Indianapolis to make the Northampton class hull and use those with the uss Chicago plans i have.maybe someone can help.have a good weekend.

IIRC the Indy is 10' longer but otherwise identical. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

The Northampton hull had a somewhat bulbous forefoot. Some of the design people suspected that this could cause unnecessary pitching during high seas, and the result would be pounding that could damage the hull, or make gunnery difficult. The solution was to remove the "bulb", but the bouyancy had to be made up somewhere. The hull was lengthened by 8' forward, and another 2' was added aft to keep the trim in balance. The additional armor came later in the design process.

I recall seeing a posting (on SN as I believe) that announced a upgrade kit for Tamiya's Indianapolis to convert to a Portland. Can someone advise manufacturer or any details?
