Hallo
I look for model plans of Yamato, the best would be in 1:200 scale, but even different scale would be good. If somebody has it scanned I'd be very gratefull. My mail is: allegro@scorpio.net.pl
Long time ago I started to build this model, but after a long break I missed plans. Please help!!!

Sauragnmon wrote:Ok... question, re - Broadside AA. Yamato's upper 12.7cm were open, Musashi closed, was Musashi then to have all twelve as enclosed, had her fit been completed? Was this then to be the standard between the two, with both only receiving a partial refit - Yamato with the lower deck enclosed, Musashi with upper enclosed and no lower deck guns?

When first completed both ships had three enclosed 12.7cm AA guns in the upper row, a single 15.5 cm triple anti-surface turret in the lower row. The enclosure is to protect the gun crew from the blast of the 18.1 inch guns.

The refit in 1944 removed the 15.5 cm triple. It was intended to replace it with 3 more 12.7 cm AA guns in the lower row. Yamato was so fitted. But there wasn't enough extra blast proof enclosure available to cover the new 12.7 mounts, so the enclosures for the upper row was transfered to the lower row because the lower row guns were more exposed to the blast from the 18.1 inch guns. It's not clear to me if it was intended to eventually fit all 12 positions with blast proof enclosures when these became available. But I think that's a reasonable assumption.

Musashi had the preparations done to also receive the extra 12.7cm AA guns, but mounts themselves were not available for a time, so she when to Lyete Gulf without the extra guns. Since there is no extra lower row 12.7 cm guns, her original upper row 12.7 cm guns retained their original blast proof enclosures. I am sure had the ship survived long enough for the extra 12.7 cm mounts to become available, and there is still an shortage of blast proof enclosures, then she would have been treated the same way as the Yamato.

Ok, so the absolute complete fit would have been all twelve enclosed, I agree it's a safe assumption, since Yamato transferred theirs to the most exposed position, meanwhile Musashi's stayed put, and if they'd had the resources, they probably would have put the other six in place, enclosed. It does make sense. Leads me to the thought of another two models to do at a later date, but for now I'll do the "What if they actually got the whole upgrade finished" look, which means I'll have to wait on construction, ironically, until the other six enclosed mounts become available.

To throw another point into your consideration, the original blast proof enclosures for Yamato's 12.7 cm and 25mm AA guns involved many compound curves and were time-consuming to manufacture. The lats batch of new 25mm mounts received simplifed shields that eliminated curves whereever possible to speed manufacture. I think it is also reasonable to suppose that if new blast proof enclosures were built to cover the new 12.7 mounts, they would also be shaped differently from the original enclosures to eliminate excess steps in manufacture.

So what else Im I missing here to make her look as she was on April 7th? If Im missing something Im all ears guys. I didnt forget about the weathered deck but please do let it pass this time

I had to do something to the combat bridge I never liked the way it looked, to me it looked way to simple Im still trying to perfect those annoying wind baffles though, Im hoping to get them right over the weekend.

A few minor things:

1. The back of the tower bridge from Tamiya is the wrong shape. The portion below the signal platform is actually concave on either side, and convex in the middle.

2. There should be a deck hatch on the back of the air defense platform, with a champanion way leading down to 1st bridge

3. The main armament director is slightly too far to the rear, and should be moved forward slightly to make room for the rear campanion way

4. There should be a vision slot in the center front of the armored conning tower.

5. The top of the auxiliary directors on either side of the tower bridge should not be flat, but convex, and topped by a director optic turret identical to the one on the top of the main director above the 15m range finders.

6. The width of the wind deflectors on the front of 1st bridge windows is not uniform across the whole width. Instead it is wider in the middle, and diminish in width towards either side.

7. The windows on the compass bridge (2nd bridge) actually doesn't extend right across the whole bridge. Instead, there should be a break in the window row on either side.

8. The shape of the crew ready room on the bottom rear of the tower bridge as provided by Tamiya is completely wrong. It should actually extend right across the whole width of the tower bridge

Youve done your homework Chuck  , a thorough homework indeed. I was aware of #s 2,7,4, Tamiyas kit has plenty of flaws and inaccuracies some of them can be fixed easily others like in my case are out of the question :eyes_spinning: , in a way Im trying to improve Tamiyas kit up to some level but there is no way for me in doing her 100% accurate as the real ship. I think in order to do this a bigger scale is needed Ive been checking some japanese dude build up on Musashi you mustve seen it before Chuck , LINK: http://sea.ap.teacup.com/applet/shin196 ... rchive?b=0 the guy is using the 1/200 scale Nichimo kit, with this size anyone experienced could do marvels with it. your points have been noted Ill see what I can do

Thanks

Jose

P.S: could you show me or refer me to a pic showing the concave shape on that back side of the bridge structure

In Super Illustrated the text referenced several newly discovered photos of the inside of Yamato's aircraft hanger. Has anyone seen these? I am scratch building the Yamato's aircraft and boat hangers, and uncertainties about these spaces is keeping me from finishing up these parts and closing up the hull.

Wood Deck Kit for 1/350 Yamato

I was wondering if anyone had any experience with the wood deck kit for the 1/350 Yamato:
http://www.modelshipwrights.com/modules ... e&sid=3401

I had originally considered using N Scale 2 x 3 train planing (.019" x 12" lengths) which would require about $55 worth of material and bunches of time. The kit would cost an extra $40 but significantly reduce the labor time.

I've also read mixed opinions regarding the use of wood at all. Some say it adds an extra measure of realism and others say just paint the deck.

Opinions?

Since the wood deck is cut to precisely fit the Tamiya model, it would make corrections to Tamiya's many mistakes and inaccuracies much more difficult.

I am both accurising and back dating my Tamiya Yamato to 1941 configuration. So the laser cut wooden decks won't work for me, and I am planking the deck with wooden strips.

The text refers to some newly discovered photos of the inside of Yamato's hangers, but the book does not actually show these photos. I am curious what those photos show. I am detailing the inside of the hanger. Except for the general floor plan, I am currently going solely by speculation. So any photos showing the hanger interior would help.

Chuck,

I'm curious about the size planking that you're using. Can you share your sizes and material supplier? I was looking at Kappler Mill & Lumber Company http://www.kapplerusa.com N Scale .013" x .019" x12", which come 10 to a pack for around $2.75 a pack.

Thanks for any info.

This is Yamatos bridge REVISED after going over some pics and Chucks points I said to me you want something neat well do something neat  . front half of the bridge is pretty much done I havent touched the back of it yet except for the crew ready room which Chuck told me I had to enlarge. It wasnt any easy doing the wind baffles and some other things with plain styrene and photoetch bits, then something hit me I remember buying some blocks of thick paper a while back and I gave it a try, guys this worked out better than I was expecting, lets just hope it holds the painting process :lol_spit_1: , Im pretty sure it will

 The wind deflectors under the windows of the 1st bridge has 3 layers of baffles in the front.

Another thing:

There are actually two 2 meter navigation range finders on either side of the air-defense platform on the top of the bridge tower. Tamiya completely neglected these and didn't even provide the plinth for range finders. This is the same type of range finder as in the small turret on the front face of the tower bridge, except on the air-defense platform they are not enclosed in turrets, but stand by themselves in the open. They should stand on either side of the main armament range finder, in the area where Tamiya showed a gap in the ring of binocular plinths around the air air-defense platform.
